Spoilers Concerning Krall's back story

I am going to use my head canon on this, and chuck up the discrepancies as the result of the Temporal Cold War.
Anyway, the USS Franklin was the first Warp-4 ship, while the Enterprise was the first Warp-5 ship. Both were experiment ships from the UEG's UESPA, which is the precursor to the Federation's Starfleet. Once these ships completed their shakedown missions, then their registry turn from "NX-" to "NCC-", and any numbering is purely "random", based on availability at that time (though tightened later under the Starfleet banner). The Earth-Romulan War takes place, and both ships, as well as their sister ships within their class, see action. Edison/Krell serves as the commander of the USS Franklin, and sees plenty of action. Later, upon the decommissioning of MACO, Edison is reassigned as an explorer, rather than accept being retired. Maybe he wants to become a flag officer someday? Anyway, the rest is history.
