CONCACAF 2009 thread

Hi.

Times are interesting in CONCACAF - the regional confederation which covers North and Central America, the Caribbean, and those parts of South America that CONMEBOL don't want - both at a club and country level.

Country-wise, the race is on to determine which teams will represent CONCACAF at the 2010 World Cup. In the fourth and final qualifying round, the last 6 teams (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and the United States) are facing off against one another, with the top three teams going straight to the World Cup, and the 4th-placed team going into a playoff with the 5th-placed CONMEBOL team to determine which confederation in the Americas will earn that last berth!

At a club level, things have already been pretty interesting, as the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League has entered its quarter-final stage, and slots are already being filled regarding who will take part in the 2009-10 contest.

The first leg games were played last week, and arbuably the story of the week was the record attendance at Montréal's Olympic Stadium (55,571 - smashing the previous record for attendance at a CONCACAF-level club game) who turned out to see the local team, the Montréal Impact, win 2-0 against Mexico's Santos Laguna.

I was at that game, and I can tell you that I have never enjoyed a game atmosphere as much - nor felt that I had been a part of a moment in a country's soccer history - than I did at the big O that night.

Other results saw the Puerto Rico Islanders beat Honduras' Marathón in the former's home leg, while Cruz Azul beat fellow Mexico City rivals UNAM Pumas 1-0, and the Houston Dynamo of MLS drew 1-1 at home against Mexico's Atlante.

The second leg matches start tonight at 10 EST - as Houston travel to Cancún, hoping to overturn the disadvantage which Atlante's away goal placed them in last week, and earn a berth in the semi-final...

...where they will meet the winner of the Montréal-Santos Laguna match, to be held in Torreón this Thursday.

Also, on Wednesday, Pumas will host Cruz Azul, while the Islanders will fly to Honduras for the re-match against Marathón.

It's promising to be an interesting set of fixtures... and I for one hope like hell that the Impact can hang on in Torreón, and earn that semi-final berth!

Thus endeth the MLS participation in this season's CCL - they lost 3-0 in Cancún to Atlante.

It remains to be seen whether Montréal or Torreón will be on Atlante's travel schedule for the semis, however...

We have the first confirmed semi-final line-up - since Puerto Rico beat Marathón 1-0 in Honduras, and Cruz Azul won by the same scoreline against UNAM Pumas in order to advance.

I'm hoping things will go well for the Impact tonight...

Hi Nerroth! Long time no see

I also hope the Impact can reach the semi-finals tonight. They're already leading 2-0 on aggregate so it's likely they'll make it.

I really hope so - an I bet the suits at CONCACAF would simply love to have another packed house at the Olympic Stadium to show off in the semis!

I just bloody wish that the CBC and Radio-Canada actually showed the damned matches live.

50K is an impressive number, congrats. I love international cup competitions, apparently Canadians feel the same way. Maybe "soccer" does have a chance to take off in North America. :)

I'd watch the game, but at 4am my time, I probably won't. ;)

Well, the Impact blew that game. Up 2-0 in aggregate and up 2-1 at halftime in Mexico (4-1 in aggregate), they blow it to lose 5-2 (5-4 in aggregate). 2 Santos Laguna goals came in injury time.

What a strange game.

Now, time to focus on the Toronto FC.

Totally heartbreaking - but the Impact did great to get that far on their first try.

Interestingly enough, it might end up that if the Islanders qualify for next season's CCL (which they should do, given the easy run they seem set to have in the CFU club championship) and Montréal don't qualify for the CCL themselves (should they lose the Voyageurs Cup this summer) they would then be the highest-finishing CONCACAF team from outside Mexico not to qualify for the next Champions League...

...and thus be potential invitees to the 2009 Copa Sul-Americana!

A bit of news from one of CONCACAF's more well-known leagues, MLS - Vancouver announced for 2011!

A second team may be announced as early as Friday - here's hoping it's Portland.

Also, in the CCL semi-finals, Puerto Rico win their home game against Cruz Azul, 2-0 - though they better be careful how el maquina handle them at the Estadio Azul next week...

I don't know if this is the right place, but did anyone else catch the El Salvador-USA WC qualifier last night? I've never been as happy to see the USA get a draw since the Italy game in the '06 World Cup.

I did. The United States will be glad to get out there with the point. They looked to me to be clearly the better team, but two lapses cost them two goals against the run of play. Two goals, I'd bet on the suspended Tim Howard having stopped. Massively hostile environment coupled with the El Salvadorians being the biggest play acting time wasters I think I've ever seen made it tough to get back in it, but they did. My guess is the United States crushes them badly at home.

^ I concur with your assessment of the game. I don't think I've ever seen 7 minutes tacked on for extra time ever in a game, that's how bad the El Salvadoran players were. And I'm sure that the US will destroy them at home. I just wish we were better on the road.

On the other hand, considering we were down 2-0, this game showed me a lot about this team. If we can get a draw at Azteca, I'd be even more impressed.

It'll be an all-Mexican final for the CCL - Cruz Azul won the return leg on the night, and went on to eke it on penalties against the Islanders.

They'll face Atlante, who overturned the deficit by winning against Santos Laguna on the road.

And also - should I set up a separate MLS thread, or leave it in here (since the league is under the CONCACAF umbrella)?

I don't see why you couldn't just leave the MLS stuff in this thread, since it is under the CONCACAF. Just my two cents.

Bump!

On Monday Philadelphia's MLS expansion franchise will have its identity officially revealed, but some overzealous website testing blew the logo and name ahead of time:

Love it! History and (slightly darkened) city colors all in one. Can't wait to see the kits later this year. I foresee a Philadelphia Union jersey with Ruaidhri 75 on the back to add to my collection.

Congratulations to Atlante for winning the 2008-09 CCL - they won 2-0 in the first leg at the Estadio Azul, then held on for a 0-0 draw in Cancún to take the title.

They'll go on to represent CONCACAF in this year's Club World Cup.

Also, qualification for the next CCL is ongoing - Puerto Rico need to win 1 of their next 2 matches in the CFU Club Championship to earn a berth, while Toronto FC have put themselves in the driving seat of the Canadian Championship, after beating both Montréal and Vancouver in TFC's opening games.

And those were both home matches for TFC, both 1-0. They win one of the road games and they'll get through to the CONCACAF CL. A pair of draws would do, too.

Nerroth, you see Barrett's goal against the Impact? Beauty!

No, I missed the game.

Oh, I forgot to note - Honduras will have a 3rd team in the upcoming CCL, since CONCACAF bounced Belize for not meeting stadium requirements this time around.

My luck seemed to be that I miss the decent matches, but tune in just in time to watch whatever team I want to see do well suck.

In other news, TFC lost 2-0 to Chicago today.
