Computer issue

For some bizarre reason, sometime on Sunday afternoon my laptop lost all interest in connecting to the internet, despite not doing anything majorly different the night before (just surfing).

I can connect to my wireless modem at home, collect an IP address and even ping IP addresses on the net. But the damn thing won't connect when I launch a browser. I knew it wasn't the modem because my wife's laptop was connecting just fine.

So then this morning at work, tried to work wireless, got nothing like at home. But then switched to Ethernet and got nothing as well. I can ping some servers at work but not all. DNS is a no go.

Now here's the annoying thing; my VMware Fusion (3.1.3) running Windows 7 works perfectly fine. So the hardware is fine, just the IP stack on my Mac is belly up.

Macbook Pro (early 2011)
Snow Leopard 10.6.8
Firewall is Off
Have tried the following things:
- Turning airport on and off
- Rebooting (several times)
- Both on Ethernet and Wireless
- Deleting preferences for network connections

Any suggestions? Found one website that said they uninstalled their VMware and it fixed it, but it seems a very bizarre fix!

Can't offer you any help but I will console you by telling are not the only one having internet problems. At about 7pm last night I started having problems. I was connected to the internet but it was taking me at least 30 seconds to download any page and some pages just timedout. This happened on every thing we had connected to the internet (iPad, 2 laptops, Wii, Xbox). Being on dailup would have been quicker.

I spent about 20 minutes last night getting help from one of my ISP tech people. He ended up telling me to do something and then told to try the internet again in four hour plus time.

I tried it at 6am this morning and it was still running slow. Phoned up tech support and the woman able to resolve the problem but it took more than half an hour. I had quite a bit of difficulty understanding her accent which was a bit frustrating.

Lets hope I have no more problems.

Make a backup of your virtual machine and just reinstall WMware, that's the simplest fix.

WMware adds a bridge, of sorts, from your "physical" wlan/ethernet connection to your virtual wlan/ethernet connection inside WMware. Sometimes these settings are messed up. Why, I have no idea. But I had the same issue with WMware, except i ran Windows 7 as a base OS. I was too lazy to mess around so i just reinstalled. That should default all settings.

Surely trashing preferences would fix that? I find it weird that I hadn't run my VM for 36 hours prior to the net trouble starting, yet surfed the web just fine in the interim.

I'll uninstall VMware and see if it does it, cheers.
