Compliments on Appearance

i never get compliments other than a few about my new glasses.

i was told by a hot chick i fancied i had a nice smile and another told me i had nice eyes. never got anywhere with either of them...

Same here. I hate the attention. Either it's somebody leering (usually guys) or delivering a backhanded compliment (usually women, as though one's appearance this time is a one-off)...there's not much sincerity in between.

That sounds more like you pushing your personal psychological issues onto others
* Unless 'how do you get calf muscles like that?' (from another guy) qualifies as a compliment.

Hell ya it is.

Most of you wouldn't want to meet me because I always hand out compliments.

This is why you and I rocked H&M, the whole store was in awe of us. Especially that hot girl following me around rockefeller center afterwords.

Wait, we were pretty awesome in the Gap too weren't we?

How much a compliment matters is in direct proportion to how much the compliment-er matter to me (for whatever reason).

This.

One has to take the source in account. Gender is only a minor part of that. Of course, getting a compliment from a pretty girl can never fail to boost ego on a superficial level, but the more important thing is the nature of the compliment (ie have they actually noticed something interesting, or is it just an automatic reaction) and the person's importance to me.

No one ever gives me compliments about my actual physical appearance. :sigh:

Sometimes I'll wear a certain shirt that people will point at and chuckle, maybe even give a thumbs-up. Shirts like this and this. ;)

Most of the compliments on appearance that I've ever gotten have involved my gorgeous blue eyes, and most of those have come from women (although I certainly appreciate compliments from anyone). This is a good thing, because I've gotten more mileage from the baby blue peepers than I have from the Barry White voice.

A couple of weeks ago, I met some ladies for lunch who I used to work with and haven't seen in a while. They told me I looked great despite having gained some weight and gotten more gray. I think that was a compliment. :rommie:

Haha, like the lady at the makeup counter the other day. I went in there without any makeup on, which means I look quite awful because of all my scars. She starts putting foundation on me and takes a step back and exclaims, "Oh, you're pretty!" in surprise. Thanks.

Scars? Oh noes! :(
Scars can be such a pain... stupid lousy rotten!!!

I think it's great that you're willing to post pics of yourself, cuz you look a lot like me! So I've decided that means I don't have to post pics of myself...

You look like Kestra? You'll be having all the guys asking for pics now :)

Heh, maybe... or they can stare at her "card" -the one for her profile pic! That cracks me up! :D

But yeah, when I first saw her pic I was like... she looks like meeee!!! For some reason I thought that was neat...

I think my skin is slightly paler at the moment due to stupid Canada's stupid never ending stupid winter...

How you doin?

Wow, it's like I've landed on the mirror universe, because I had no idea so many people were so uncomfortable getting compliments: I'm not shy about my comments in real life and I hand out compliments like confetti at a carnival (even if I try and limit myself on-line for the creepiness factor mentioned by sidious). If I see something I like (someone's smile, eyes, or just their shirt), I might as well say it. Maybe there is a cultural divide somewhere, because here it's very common for people to be very complimenting to each other. I don't get tons of them, but I do get them, and it's nice.

Obviously, getting a compliment from a lovely lady tingles all the right spots, but I appreciate compliments from guys, too. It just means they like something about me, so I don't see any downsides!

I'm not *uncomfortable* getting compliments, I'm just not used to it. Most of the time it's like I said - just getting responses to funny shirts I might be wearing.

As for giving compliments: Gotta be careful with that too. Never know when you might get slapped or sued or both. :borg:

I don't know "uncomfortable", but I do often feel awkward only because the vast majority of the compliments I receive come from from older women and have something to do with my hair.

It's really odd. :vulcan:

^ I got that at work once. I was approached by three very nice 'sassy' older ladies who all proceeded to point at my bald head and give rather "awwww...." like comments. I wasn't quite sure what to think about that. :alienblush: :D

Or I could get myself a shag, a date, or simply a smile. I will take the risk.

More seriously, I don't share your concerns: I gave thousands of compliments in my life, and I never got slapped for it. Not once. And I could count on the finger of one hand the times they weren't received in the same spirit they were given, i.e. appreciation. Obviously, you have to know when to do it, and when not to do it. But common sense should be enough. As for the crippling fear of being sued, it must be an American thing, because that's the last thing in my mind when I talk to a woman. Remember the advice about "having more fun": this is one of instances.

Something about this post seemed different somehow. It's so light and happy!

Do you really have scales?

I am always light and happy! And my scales are pretty and shiny! And someone must have spiked my espresso this morning! Oh my!

Guess the harassment laws are a bit more lax over there. ;)
Maybe. But I doubt it. My guess is that people don't take life so damn seriously and have fun sometimes. :p

I'm with you on this, I always compliment people, and I always say thank you when I recieve them.

Good god.

And seriously, if I ever encountered a woman who slaps me because I told her I thought her hair looked amazing, how great I thought her shoes were, that would be her problem, not mine.

Seriously guys, always notice a woman's shoes. Trust me on this. I'm sure all the "ladies" will back me up.
