Comparison #1: Episode 2 vs. Episode 3 vs. Episode 29

It's all in the lighting, writing and the lower-keyed Shatner perforamnce, plus just the "learning the characters and how they interact" feeling we get.

Spock is lit quite differently early on, his bangs are shorter, make-up seems different (different base, maybe) and Nimoy seems skinnier, not by much, looks like he may have gained about 8-10 pounds as the season wore on. Bones' hair is slightly different as well.

Gene Coon had nothing to do with Court- Martial, as I recall. He didn't come on until a little later, I think, though I may be wrong?

Now I don't know for sure, but I think ST was given 13 eps, and then, after those did okay in the ratings, picked up for a full season. I would think they would try to shoot in-studio as much as possible for the first 13, then spend a bit more and bus everybody out to Vasquez Rocks and Africa, U.S.A. after they knew they had a bit more time and money to spend.

I caught his name at the closing of the episode.

To my shame I must admit I've never really thought about this issue before. I've been a fan since the original run, but I was just a little kid, and really didn't become a rel Trekkie until the 70's syndication run, when I was old enough to really appreciate it on more mature level.

As a result, even though I've seen all the eps dozens of times over the decades, I've never really sat down and watched them in broadcast order, or production order.

During the syndication runs in the 70's and 80's (at least here in Atlanta), they seemed to show them randomely. You could see Corbomite Manuever one night and All our Yesterdays the next night.

I had seen the episode lists, of course, in order, so I always knew where the eps fit in the series, but not seeing them in order, I never paid much attention to the subtle changes in style/lighting, etc, as the show progressed.

And even though I have had the season sets for a while now, I still haven't sat down and watched them in order. Since they are not serialized, like DS9, or modern shows like 24, when I want to see some good Trek, I just pick one and watch it.

So even though I have nothing technical to add to this discussion, seeing this has motivated me to do this for once.

It's funny, I do this with other shows all the time. When I buy a new season set of CSI, I watch it start to finish, in order. Obviously, that's the only way you can watch 24 or Lost. And I also watched the DS9 sets in order.

But I've never watched TOS, my favorite, that way. So now I must.

See you in 79 hours. Oh, wait, there is that whole "job" thing...

Maybe a slight delay...

With only one post in the past three weeks it would seem to be time to unpin this thread. I'll pin the next comparison when it gets underway. I've enjoyed the discussion in this one even though, due to real life, I wasn't really able to participate.
