Communicator watch

The stellar irony here is that in the Star Trek universe, the United Federation of Planets is a post-scarcity, post-capitalist society where money is obsolete and its enlightened citizens work instead for self-improvement and the betterment of humanity. Hautlence didn't get this memo, as each Retrovision ’64 will retail for an out-of-this-world $165,000. Only three ardent Trekkies will be able to get one, though, as that's all that will be made.

That's...a lot of credits.

I think I'll stick with my Timex.

(And yes, it's a matter of pride that I wear a $38 Timex, rather than a more expensive watch, that I write with a low-end Pelikan, rather than a Mont Blanc, and that I drive a pre-owned 2018 Nissan Leaf, with a bumper sticker that says, "Not a Tesla, and DAMN PROUD of it.")

Ironically, in TMP, the flip-open communicators were replaced by wrist-band communicators. By TWOK, however, they were largely phased out in lieu of new flip-open ones.

Yeah, the authentic Star Trek thing was right there and they didn't go for it...

For the price it looks tacky. I’d be embarrassed to say I’d spent so much on it.

For a tenth of the price you could get a beautiful watch to be proud of. For a hundredth of the price you could, actually.

Hmm. "Hautlence." Only a few letters away from flatulence.

I'd hardly call my $38 Timex ugly. Seems to me that they did this for the same reason that dogs lick their genitals: they did it because they can.

I’m not a person who puts stock in things like expensive watches like yourself. I wear a Casio, it tells the time and that’s fine for me.

I wouldn’t call your Timex ugly. At the same time though, I can appreciate fine things. A nice $500-$1000 watch will look nicer than what we wear.

This Star Trek watch does not look nice.

"Veblen Good" is basically a $20 word for "snob appeal."

And "conspicuous consumption" has always brought to my mind somebody with a very obvious and completely untreated case of tuberculosis. ("TB or not TB: that is the consumption.")

I don't even wear a watch, it's easier to pull my phone out of my pocket than push the sleeve of a parka out of the way in the winter, and in the summer sweat-rashes from the wristband aren't anything I miss.

I think the problem is that watch looks like a goofy, piece of cheap shit you got at Hot Topic. Folks spending $165k for a watch are buying an IWC or Patek Philippe to impress the other fatcats in the boardroom.
Didn’t Elon Musk post a photo showing he slept with a Mass Effect prop reproduction gun under his pillow? There only needs to be three tacky 1%er nerds for this to pencil out. Maybe less if one or more are bought by a museum or high-end store that just wants to put it display as a curio to get people in the door.

(I checked, it was from Deus Ex.)
