Was that a round about veiled reference to the Defiant when she was discussing about the new weapons coming on line, but were 18 mos of so away. This was done while conversing w/Data and LaForge in BoBW.

It would seem the proper timeline of the making then scraping of the Defiant.
Thoughts?

I'm not sure. I had always assumed from Sisko's dialog in "The Search" that he had helped design her after Wolf 359.

I could be wrong, though.

That's a good point. She could have been talking about specific weapons on ships (like the Defiant's pulse phasers or ablative armor).

We do know that Sisko worked at Utopia between Wolf and DS9. We wonder if Sisko helped design AND build the ship or just help put together after design.

Sisko also says that production was abandoned because the Borg threat became less serious. I would think if it were under construction pre-Wolf 359, then something like that would have fast tracked it into earlier service if anything else.

I would think it would be the Defiant, since she's primary designed to battle the borg?

It's very possible that the idea for the Defiant came about because the new weapons systems were impractical for already existent vessels. Or that they would be most effective when combined with a new Design of starship.

That never made sense to me because it didn't seem like the Borg threat became less serious after Wolf 359. If anything it was more serious because now the Federation knows that one cube can wreck 40+ ships with ease. For that reason, I always assumed that the Defiant was being researched post-Wolf 359, but when the Dominion started rumbling the Feds switched their focus to that and decided to send Sisko the Defiant. Thus the Borg didn't really become "less" of a threat, but rather a secondary concern.

While bored one day I was reading memory beta (yeh yeh "non cannon") and it sugested that the Defiant and Soverign classes were being developed to meet borg threat but never got off the ground in time.

(Pity, they made a mistake throwing outdated Mirandas like the Saratoga at a borg cube)

Jadzia makes a reference to a Captain Shelby of the Sutherland in "You Are Cordially Invited..." but that's it. No gender specification, no appearance of said character. Just that she knows the Captain. I'd like to think its the same character, but I also get the feeling that Ron Moore was just fucking around with those of us paying attention.

Sounds like something Moore would have liked to have done...

Forgive me for submitting this, but what about making Voyager a Captain Shelby series? :D

I would not have minded seeing Shelby show up sometime during the dominion war... Ben and her could have been friends... :D

According to the DS9 companion, it was supposed to be the same character. However, at that point, Paramount had promised not to ruin the continuity of Peter David's New Frontier novels. It was a mistake, so RDM has justified it by saying that Shelby's a common name, and that it's not the same character.

Which is good enough for me.

yeah, the NF novels mention there's another Captain Shelby and 'our' Shelby wonders if she got promoted and no-one told her...

I would have only watched it if she was first officer and Riker was captain. :D

Lame! Why is Paramount promising not to wreck the continuity of novels when it's accepted that the books will never be canon?

I honestly don't think that any such promise was ever made or ever would be made. That being said, I'm glad that they didn't get too specific about this "Capt. Shelby" as I love the NF novels and would've hated to see her be written out for whatever reason.

I also seem to remember when Peter David was asked about the (thankfully false) rumors that Robin Lefler was to appear in Nemesis as Wesley's wife, he said that he hoped it wasn't true, but if it were, he would find a way to work it in to New Frontier. That suggests that TPTB wouldn't hesitate to contradict the NF novels.

Besides, "canon" in a fictional universe is a wholly irrelevant issue.
