well, after having given up on Voyager in its first season when it first broadcast, I'm about to try again. I happened to stumble on a very good deal for a complete series dvd set, so I'm off.

Masochist? Maybe.

Oh, I don't think so. I think you'll find a lot to enjoy about it. It's certainly got its share of flaws, but then again, so does anything else.

you wouldn't be the first who converts to voyager. it gets nice when the kazon are gone, and becomes top when the borg enter the picture. enjoy the doc and 7 in particular.

I am one of the ones who discovered Voyager again after it was off the air. I remember watching the first season when it aired, but due to work/school issues at the time never really got into it.

I agree with JustKate that while it has it has its flaws, it also has a certain appeal and charm to it. I am debating on rather to get them on DVD. I just worry that as soon as I buy them, they will come out with some fancy box set.

Only half the time. Best of luck to ya

No, not a masochist at all.
While Voyager is a severely flawed show, it is still 90s Star Trek and as a result is incredibly enjoyable and still very special.
While Voyager disappointed me a lot, its still one of my favourite shows of all time - its freakin Star Trek for goodness sake!

well, I just watched the first two episodes, and they were better than I remember.

Maybe I'm getting soft with old age.

Oh, and by the way, that "really good deal" turned out too good to be true. They were bootlegs. But then I found the first two seasons pretty cheap at Walmart, so I'm still in.

Enjoy watching the whole seven seasons. Like all the Trek forms, there are good and bad with each. The Dr. provides for some very good watching.

As someone who hated Voyager originally, but came back after some time.. I can say this:

There are nuggets of Voyager that are watchable, and 1 or 2 that are almost as good as a bad TNG or DS9 episode.

The best advice I can give you is keep your fast forward button handy, and don't get discouraged by all the trash episodes you have to wade through.

I'm already seeing that I'm not going to enjoy Neelix much.

Funny, because I like the comic token alien on Enterprise.

Why shouldn't they have an annoying character on the show anyway?
Its clear he annoys the crew too, some people are just annoying so aren't they showing more diversity by having an annoying person on board??

Diversity for the sake of diversity is SUCK.

In a story, there are only 2 acceptable paths the annoying character can take:

1. They cease being annoying
or
2. They die in a spectacular way and the audience cheers

Paths which insist on retaining the annoying character crapify up a plotline to the point where it is less and less enjoyable.

Would Star Wars be better without c3PO? ABSOLUTELY!
Would BSG be better without Muffat? YES!
Were there any annoying characters in Star Trek 2? NO!

Join the fight against annoying characters! Say no to Jar Jar! Say no to Scotty's annoying alien buddy in the 2009 Trek film! Say no to that cutsie baby alien from the Lost in Space movie!

Just say NO!

I'm sorry, but that's a pretty weak defense.

Anyway, I'm only a couple episodes in, so I will try to be open-minded.

Although Ethan Phillips is a capable actor, I think Neelix was always a weak character. However, he was much worse in the early seasons than in the later ones. He was quite tolerable and even occasionally endearing by the end of the show. Anyway, I won't pretend to be a huge fan of this show, but there are some great episodes to be found among the boring stuff, and even the crap ones have an undeniably great theme tune!

Well, you can look forward to Tuvok strangling Neelix, for whatever incentive that is to you.

IMO, S4 was the only consistently good VOY season. 1-3 were mostly forgettable with a few gems, 5 wasn't that great, and S6 and S7 were like TNG's S6 and S7; that is they had some of the show's greatest moments, and also some really really horrible eps.

I was with you til you got to C3P0. Maybe he is annoying at times, but lumping him in with Jar Jar? That's just cruel man! Cool Space Quest avatar though. :)

On Neelix, (okay Kes fans, prepare to get annoyed) I feel that he becomes much less annoying after Kes leaves the show. Tying those characters together was a horrible idea. He isn't featured as much in the later seasons, and some of the episodes that do focus on him in the later seasons are pretty good. For the 1st few seasons though, yeah he is terrible.

But to the TC, yeah give Voyager a chance. It has some really great episodes that can stand up to anything any of the other Trek series have to offer. But the quality tends to vary wildly from week to week. There are probably only 10 episodes from the entire run that I absolutely refuse to watch again. By my standards, that ain't bad.

Kes leaving the show isn't what changed the character. The writer's changed the character. Don't forget this isn't real life.
Also, they broke up less than half way into season 3 or so.
