This was #19 in DC's second series. Was written by Peter David and is by far my favorite Trek comic. For those who haven't read it the story is about a new ensign to the ship who gives his life to save Kirk. Kirk then must deal with the letter to his parents and realizes that he didn't know the ensign and deal with how many people that have died saving him or friend and how many he has sent to their death. Peter David really got into the soul of an older Kirk dealing with life and death. If you get the chance read this one.

Yeah, it's a good one, though it was pretty much inspired by the 1982 M*A*S*H episode "Who Knew?" Not that that's a bad thing. One of PAD's other classic Trek comics, "Retrospect," was inspired by Harold Pinter's play Betrayal.
Was that the Scotty love story issue Christopher?
CaptMoe it's been two decades since I've read Once A Hero, but I remember the story clearly. Excellent stuff.
I really can't wait to get my hands on all of Peter David's Trek comics from that era - no other comics writer has come close to matching the quality of his work over a long period. Reading his stuff was one of my great memories of growing up.
It's a shame he couldn't have done a few more years on both DC runs to wrap up some of his storylines. I gather he left pretty abruptly both times, leaving things up in the air a bit.
His dialogue was just perfect - he really understood the soul of those characters. His take on the ageing crew aboard the 1701-A was spot on. I just wish he'd returned to that era for more comics/novels.
Anyway, if you see any of his Trek stuff from the late 80's-early 90's, grab it.

Yeah, I really liked this one too.
I remember this one very well. Loved it and still have it in my collection. In fact I read it again a few months back and enjoyed it all over again.
