Comic book movies: Why is #3 always bad?

With the more modern super-hero movies, it also makes the mistake of trying to include too much. Too many villains muddy the waters.

I think that stems from a fixation on the number three in regards to franchises. Look at JJ Trek. A lot of people are saying that after he makes his third, the studio will probably find a new runner and reboot AGAIN.

In regards to current super franchises, that means #3 is the last chance to get all those "cool" things in that you wanted to do (as a producer) in 1 and 2 but couldn't for either budget reasons or otherwise.
