Columbia Bridge Lights?

So.. wouldn't that drive you nuts having those huge flashing upwards panels on the bridge of the NX-02? Was it a temporary thing (while they were powering something up)? It seemed like it was a constant.

Could be that when they upgunned the ship during construction, they had to install power conduits in places not intended to receive any. And just by looking at a starship's main engineering, we can easily tell that the toughest radiation shielding ever devised by man must consist of transparent material; plating or painting it over is apparently impossible...

Only slightly more seriously, I might suggest that those power conduits were indeed a symptom of the upgunning, and that the cover plates for them were temporarily removed because the ship was still undergoing vital testing. A change in the pattern of pulsing lights might give the skipper the seconds of advance warning she'd need to save her vessel from a disastrous malfunction of some sort.

They remind me of the lights in ops on ds9. Didn't those lights pulse faster when Columbia was at warp?

The bridge lights flashing was to add more colour and show the transition into the more bright TOS era, it's the same with the blue doors, ala TOS coloured doors.

You all see technical reasons for it, I see: They needed a way for the viewers to tell two identical ships apart at a glance :p

In-universe it might work as an at-a-glance method of guaging the ships' current power consumption. It would be clearly visible to the entire staff anywhere on the bridge, much more so than a little bar filling up on an LCD monitor in the corner.

I reckon it was going to be a more explosive way of killing red-shirts on the bridge. Up til now in ST, we've just had to have people die from exploding computer consoles.

Pathetic!

Blowing up one of these bad boys would've been epic. ;)
