Collider article Michael Giaccino (Scoring Star Trek, Justin Lin)

With the work that you’ve done on Star Trek, has Justin Lin talked to you about returning to score Star Trek 3?
GIACCHINO: I haven’t really talked to them yet about it because they’re in such a crazy schedule crunch, and I personally wanted to just get through all of this before looking at anything next. I need a break. But I imagine that I will be talking to them soon about all of this, and we’ll figure out what’s going to happen next. From what I understand, from everyone at Bad Robot, everyone loves Justin. He’s a super sweet guy. So, we’ll see what happens there. Honestly, I was just like, “I can’t even think beyond next week, let alone next year.” I just wanted to clear all of this stuff out, and then think about what’s next.

I hope he is confirmed for the score of trek3 too, I think he had done an amazing job so far.

I was very underwhelmed by his work on Trek 09, which was basically "I thought of one killer riff for this movie and by God if I'm not going to do it until we're all sick of it," but he did knock it out of the park with Into Darkness.

Still, though, if he needs a break, he needs a break.

Only seems to confirm he may not be the best choice due to exhaustion.

I wouldn't want him to take it on if he doesn't feel up to snuff. There's no shame in passing on it if that's what's best for the project.

If not Giacchino, then perhaps Marc Streitenfeld (Prometheus).

I really liked his opening theme for Prometheus. It seemed to entail a sense of adventure of a sort, and I thought he might do a decent Trek score if given the chance. He's got some really cool chops for the more intense scenes as well.

Harry Gregson-Williams actually wrote that theme at Ridley Scott's request (Streitenfeld wasn't getting anywhere with one).

Howard Shore ended up doing the same thing in the first Hobbit film, so it happens.

The rest of the score was fantastic. (in both cases!)

Ahhhh..... thanks for the clarification.

Well.... perhaps Mr. Gregson-Williams then. :)

Eh, if you want someone who left Hans Zimmer's School of Robots without becoming a Zimmer clone you probably want John Powell.

I would not mind another composer, if he does need a break. Still, I loved his themes, and I hope whoever composes it reuses the his main theme.

Star Trek is no stranger to changing composers.

He's got time to take a break, if he needs it. Assuming the gig does end up being his, it'll be months yet before his part of the job comes up. The composer really doesn't begin working until the movie is very close to being in its finished form.
