College student seeks personal assistant for $10-$12 per hour...

...and receives a ton of crap over it. Basically, a lot of people are hating on Charley Cooper for "furthering the stereotype that Georgetown is filled with wealthy kids who can't do anything for themselves." A Georgetown blog site even posted about his ad with the headline: "Georgetown sophomore seeks personal assistant, takes premature self-importance to whole new level."

So does a college student who is just a student need a personal assistant? I personally think it's excessive (in an L.A. Story kind of way where Steve Martin needs to drive to his neighbor's house that is only a couple houses away), but I don't hate him for it. And it's a part-time job for someone else to do menial work.

Washington Post article via MSNBC (so you don't have to register to read it)

.....

Cooper, 19, logged on to the university's student employment Web site last week and posted an ad for someone to tackle "some of my everyday tasks," such as organizing his closet, dropping him off and picking him up from work, scheduling haircuts, putting gas in the car and taking it in for service, managing his electronic accounts and doing laundry (although the assistant will be paid only for the time spent loading, unloading and folding clothes, not the entire laundry cycle).

The successful applicant can expect to work three to seven hours a week and make $10 to $12 an hour, although "on occasion it will be possible to work additional hours and/or receive bonuses at my discretion." Preference will be given to Georgetown undergraduates, Cooper says in the listing, and the assistant can spread his or her tasks throughout the day.

.....

Cooper would answer questions only through messages sent to his Facebook account, which features a photo of a man in a striped polo shirt holding a champagne flute. He provided only brief details about himself, his family and his job: He grew up in Bethesda and graduated from the Landon School, a private boys school, in 2008. He lives in the dorms and hasn't declared a major but is planning to double-major in finance and management, perhaps with a minor in Spanish. His Linked-In profile says he is considering jobs in finance, entertainment or both. In the spring, he got a part-time job in the D.C. offices of a financial services company that he didn't want to identify, where he works as an assistant and manages a team of interns.

.....

"Everybody probably knows who he is now," said Sarah Murphy, 19, a sophomore English major who heard about the job listing from friends. "People are not happy. They think he's just ridiculous and full of himself."

But other students were more understanding. "Listen, I think if there's a market for it, and someone wants to do it, all the more power to him," said Corey Sherman, 20, a junior international politics major who has two jobs. "Maybe he just wants the personal touch — knowing the human being folding his underwear." (Earlier in the week, a Georgetown junior posted a similar job listing, according to the Georgetown Heckler, a campus humor blog. The student did not respond to an e-mail Thursday and it could not be determined whether the listing was a parody.)

It's a Capitalist world. Time and again, society has learned that - as a whole - when people who have money are allowed to spend it however they see fit, that works out best for everyone.

As for the dude; I spent my teenage years bringing the family groceries home on a bicycle. I suppose that it is natural for me to be a little bit hesitant to rejoice over snobby young people who waste money simply because they have inherited rich and responsible parents.

Thankfully, the way he spends his money isn't any of my business. If I were him, however, I would pay the personal assistant to attend class and do my homework for me, and take care of the laundry and bank accounts myself. Just a suggestion. :p

I feel sorry for the guy. You know, from what I can see, his life is busy and he needs some help. He's just paying someone to do what we would normally ask friends to do (well, except for the underwear part), but there's no reason to crucify the guy for trying to find a little help and be willing to pay for it. People need jobs, people have needs. This guy's need is someone else's job, and I'm sure an extra $90-$100 a week would be welcome for any college student.

How hard is it to throw some clothes into a washing machine and put it on quick spin?

How hard is it to shop online and have door delivery?

How hard is it to catch a bus or order a taxi? or better yet learn to drive and get a car? if he can already drive and already has a car then why does he need someone to do the driving? How long does it take to shove petrol in the car once a week?

How hard is it to call the hairdressers and make an appointment?

This kiddo is a right lazy ass clown. Unless he's studying 24/7 there's no reason he can't fit in regular tasks that don't even require doing daily.

Well, he does have a job of his own, and a fairly heavy sounding class load. I think calling him a slacker is a bit unfair. The job does sound like a bit of a scam though... 'do my laundry, but I will only pay you for the time loading/unloading and folding'. Bah!

I'd be perfectly willing to pay $100 a week to have all my annoying menial tasks done for me. Any volunteers? J. Allen? It's in sunny San Diego... our beach girls are no joke...

Because he was publicly lambasted for a not unreasonable ad in the paper.

San Diego, $100 a week AND beach girls?! Hot damn!

Nothing wrong with this at all, except that he's not paying anywhere near enough.

Ah, well here $10-$12 an hour would be considered pretty solid pay. When I worked at Dell I was making $13 an hour, and that was considered very good.

I can't see a problem here. He wants some help doing some stuff that he either doesn't have the time or the inclination to do and he's willing to pay for it. Seems fair to me. If I had the means I'd probably pay someone to come to do my housework and shopping.

At three to seven hours a week, the "successful applicant" may pull in 36 bucks in a week. And there are no benefits involved. And it sounds like the guy is a nitpicker for hours worked, given the laundry comment.

For what he wants, I'd do it for $10-$12 an hour...

But I'm betting I'm missing the most important (and unlisted) requirement - an accessible and desirable vagina.

I don't think it's really relevant if doing laundry and driving is difficult or if he has the time for it. I mean, he's made the decision that he'd like some help with it and he's willing to pay someone to do that. It could be worse. He could be having these issues but mooching off of friends, getting a girlfriend to do laundry, etc. He put a job out there and people don't have to apply for it if they don't like it.

I do think it would be a crappy job though, given the hours and the wages.

I can't imagine why this kid would care what people thought of how he lives his life and what he chooses to do with his money. People should mind their own business.
