collaborative fanfic

I’m wondering about the idea of collaborative fanfic.

I’ve seen many sites that try to do it sequentially, like [THREAD=90881]this[/THREAD]. Somebody posts part of a story, then somebody else posts what happens next, and so on. I never see that approach produce anything good.

What about a top-down approach? Somebody posts a broad outline of a story idea. Other people suggest changes and additions. Over time we pick the ideas we like best, drop the ideas we don’t, and add detail.

Anybody ever tried something like that on a BBS?

I was going to post the same thing. Unfortunately all of ours (thus far) have petered out before reaching an ending, but what's allowed us to have some coherence in our stories at Ad Astra is that there have always been discussion threads and places to post supplemental material.
