CoE: Orphans - WTF?

I'm about two thirds of the way through Orphans and I have to say that it's by far the weirdest of the Corps of Engineers stories up to that point. I'm enjoying it but I just have to say kudos to Kevin Killiany for being able to pull it off.

Good stuff, and I'll work my way through the rest of Grand Designs soon.

The same with me. I had to struggle through the story a little but as I just couldn't figure out where it went. Somehow, it didn't seem to "float" as well as the others.

But for those of use that are reading or have read the ebook edition, it's ebook #38 of the entire series including the CoE relaunch.

As I said (quite clearly, I thought): "Orphans" is SCE #38.

CoE instalments appear to be unnumbered.

Let me know how you feel when you've worked your way to the end.

I appreciate Keith letting me take a few chances with that one -- giving dates in the People's base-four calendar, multiple points of view, etc. He also let me bring in some of my favorite tropes from "golden age" science fiction. I'll admit it's not your typical Trek, per se, but the spirit of trying new things -- and blending old with new -- is Trek to the bone.

Kevin, I've now finished Orphans, and the rest of the Grand Designs TPB, and I really have only one gripe. After they were beamed back up to the ship, you kind of glossed over all the cuts, scrapes, bullet wounds and broken bones that they suffered. I felt that a few extra paragraphs, or even an extra chapter, on them being healed would have tidied it up nicely.

That said, it was a very enjoyable-if bizarre-read and I liked the idea of golden age sci fi being introduced in such a way. It worked, and I look forward to more from you in the Star Trek sandbox.

^ Well, I think you'll be pleased with Honor, which I think is an even stronger story than Orphans -- and I found Orphans to be excellent.

I just finished Orphans yesterday. To be honest, it was a confusing mess. I did no really enjoy it. Even the bits with the Klingons made little sense.

The Klingon S.C.E. rocks my socks. When are they going to team up with the Gorkon?

To be honest, I think it's forgettable.
