CNN declares PS3 "A Sinking Ship"

Agreed. You can probably agree it's just as stupid as the people who called Sega games "crap" back in the Saturn/Dreamcast days because their hardware wasn't selling.

Then five years after DC dies everyone pops out of the wood work and talks about how GREAT the Dreamcast was and how it was a classic gaming console with such a great "Awesome Game" ratio. And they bought them all on EBay no doubt.

I was there with cash in hand on 9/9/99, where the hell were the rest of these people? Oh that's right, they were holding onto their Playstation 1s while waiting anxiously to pay $500 for the PS2. So's life I guess.

QFT x50.

The main reason the Wii is selling in such huge numbers is simple: Nintendo has been targeting the Wii to people who aren't big-time gamers, which is a market segment that has been ignored by Sega, Sony, and Microsoft for a long time. By tapping into the large group of people who don't play games that much, they are basically printing their own money these days. Just look at Nintendo's ads for the Wii: you have older people, middle-aged people, and younger kids shown. That's who they are targeting.

The Wii is an incredibly overrated system and it's not a current gen console despite what the gushers believe.

Because it's technologically behind the times? By that definition PS3 and X360 aren't current-gen machines either.

I can't believe the Xbox 360 is already three years old. Where has that time gone?

I think it's only in the last six months that someone flipped the switch describing PS3/X360 as "next-gen" to "current-gen".

I was there on 9/9/99 ready to pick up my Dreamcast, and I loved it. But, it just didn't last.

About the Wii targeting casual gamers. What a lot of people don't mention is this - causal gamers doesn't mean non gamers. The Wii isn't a hit because grandmas and 50 year old men are suddenly buying these things on their own. The Wii is a hit because causal gamers have bought it and spread it around to, yes, people like them. But my point is, as a once hardcore gamer turned casual gamer I know I was driven away from this gen by two things - exhorbitant price and multiple changing versions of systems.

Not to mention games that have half hour long movie like intros, with control schemes you can't just pick up and play without memorizing a chart. Also the serious, hostile nerd atmosphere is not endearing to anyone.

The Wii is a success because Sony and Microsoft drove away a large segement of their gamers that began with atari's, nes's and even ps1's.

I don't think anyone will dispute that there are a few games for Wii that are a sheer blast to play. Mario Galaxy, Smash Bros. Brawl, and Twilight Princess are a few that made my must-have list. Are there some shortcomings in the Wii's third-party lineup? Even as a lifelong Nintendo fan, I have to say yes.

However, the Virtual Console system makes it so that there does not need to be a huge quantity of AAA Wii games coming out. They have the best of the NES, SNES, N64, and Genesis available for $10 or less apiece, and all GameCube games are playable with the Wii. New and casual gamers have a vast catalog of games to choose from. Those who constantly are looking for the next big game are probably using another console as their primary system just due to the technical capabilities, so it does not make sense to target that audience as heavily with the Wii.

I had lots of fun on my Dreamcast, even though I knew it was a sinking ship (Sega bit me in the ass with the 32X and I avoided the Saturn). Even back when I was a kid I could tell something was fishy when the video game store guy at the mall was pitching the Dreamcast to a couple (back before I knew what those stores were like).

Really had fun with Sega Sports getting into the competition. Played NHL a lot. And Crazy Taxi. And Worms.

I think I'm the only 'core' gamer who owns a Wii and couldn't be less interested in Nintendo's games. They always peddle the same crap, year in, year out and beyond Mario Kart and the 2 Zelda games from the N64 era, I find little to enjoy in Nintendo's first party offerings.

I bought my Wii to play Sonic and the Secret Rings, and didn't regret it. Then I played NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams, and didn't regret that either. Now I'm playing Samba de Amigo, and that is also awesome. I'm looking forward to Mad World and Sonic and the Black Knight next year. Those games, plus a few others (RE: Umbrella Chronicles, Mario Kart, Forever Blue) more than justify the purchase of the console for me.
