Clip From Phase II Episode "The Child"

We've released on YouTube a short scene from "The Child." Like all out little YouTube clips, this is a work in progress. The music isn't final, the sound is echo-y and hasn't been cleaned up yet, and I think the editing needs to be tightened up a bit. The scene drags a bit. But it does give folks their first look at our new Spock--Mr. Brandon Stacy.

It bears repeating that Brandon was Zachary Quinto's stand-in as Spock in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movie.

It also bears repeating that "The Child" was written and directed by Mr. Jon Povill. Our script is much closer to the original 1970's Phase II series script for "The Child" that Jon wrote. It's a bit different from the TNG episode based on his script. (Jon was never happy with that re-write but couldn't offer any input since all WGA writers were on strike at that time back in 1988.)

Here's the clip. It's about a minute long.

It's interesting. I find it hard to get a take on the clip without the context of the larger scene. He is very natural in his delivery during the emotional part. One of the promblem I keep having with all "new" Spocks including Quinto, is that they lack Nimoy's deep vocal tone. I feel that most actors that get cast Vulcans as a whole lack this. They almost sound like they are whispering. It's probably just me.....

It's difficult to critique a performance when there is such a small clip to go by and without the context as stated above.

In any case, the new Spocks do lack Nimoy's gravitas. Quinto, however, had a unique cadence in his delivery. As did the first NV/Phase II Spock, Jeff Quinn. Ben Toplin had a deeper tone than both.

One thing Quinn had was Nimoy's impish quality to Spock. That kind of bemused look that Spock got from time-to-time on the original series.

As for Stacy, I'll have to see his entire performance, and I think it unfair to critique a performer by seeing only a snippit.
