In an interview on E! he comfirmed that he and Bana play Romulans. He compared them to pirates and Johnny Depp's pirate. He said they also got a linguist to develop Romulan.

Very interesting. I wonder if he means anything beyond that these are independently working Romulans by calling them pirates. By “think Johnny Depp” does he mean that there’ll be a charming likability and eccentricity to these villians, or just that they don’t believe in rules and stuff?

I wonder how much of previous phrases they’ve incorporated into this version of Romulan (like when they incorporated Doohan’s sounds in Star Trek III).

Gonna' have to check my source on this one. He is working with several people right now on Fast and the Furious 4 that came over from Trek XI. One of the guys he's working with swore up and down Nero was Klingon as he was on set most days that Bana was. Chris has never let me down before, but I suppose his associate may not have known the difference between Romulans and Klingons even if he was working on set. That is entirely possible. You don't need to be Trek saavy to work on a Trek set.

Never even occured to either Chris or I that this guy may not have known the difference.

I am glad that the debate is now over.

You know, the whole plot of a Romulan going back in time from the 24th century to screw Kirk makes some sort of sense.

But nothing like the Rommies. They basically got their asses handed to them most of the time by the Feds, even if the Feds had lower level tech compared to the Romulans. Kirk started the shite by not only first destroying the Praetor's pride in Balance of Terror, but actually stole the cloaking device in another encounter. And if Nero is the lovechild or grandchild of the lovechild between Spock and that female Romulan commander, he'd seriously have a big grudge against our favorite crew.

Too much continuity for the general public there, though. It's like saying Bana, if Klingon, is Lursa and Betor's nephew...possible he'd want to get back at the Federation and have Romulan help, but too continuity heavy for the public.

More likely, he's a Romulan who wants to return the Empire to its glory days. Maybe in the 24th century, Spock is brokering a permanent alliance between it and the Federation/Klingon Alliance. (That possibility, in Nemesis, remember, seemed to be hopeful...well, maybe now it's a reality). So, while Spock is busy, Nero and his group decide to take action to stop it, not by sabotaging the negotiations, but by erasing the timeline itself.

But wouldn't Nero's going back in time to a place where he would encounter Kirk and Spock in their earlier days mean possible temporal changes that would interfere with Nero's own conception and therefore very existence? If Nero was the result of the "Enterprise Incident", he cannot kill off Spock or interfere with Kirk until after the EI episode occurs or else he wipes himself out. So I think this scenario is unlikely. Would be intriguing but seems impossible.

I wonder what time period the Romulans that travel back in time are from, Pre nemesis i assume, seeing a Picard and crew almost single handily saved the Romulan Empire from a mad man, i think that alone would make relations with the Romulan Empire a lot more freindly.

There is little doubt that Nero is Romulan (or some romulan/vulcan mix or whatnot). I mean, 24th century Spock is on Romulus, and has little to do with the klingons, if anything. So a Romulan/Spock story is all set up, whereas a Klingon story isn't.
