Cliff Robertson has died

And Charley in Charley.

For the record, I believe he was the only actor to ever win an Oscar for starring in a science fiction movie, unless we're counting Fredric March in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

I knew him only as John F. Kennedy in PT 109. I had no idea he was also Uncle Ben.

His blacklisting for reporting a studio executive's embezzlement is a blight on 70s and 80s Hollywood.

I saw him often, as he lived on Long Island and was in NYC frequently. I have a personal story about him - about 30 years ago, my dad was an electrician at Rockefeller Center. He was working the lights at a hollywood party in the Rainbow Room at 30 Rock. Cliff Robertson was there with his then wife Dina Merrill. A passing waiter dropped an entire tray of food pratically in Robertson's lap. My dad waited for the explosion at the poor waiter, but he said Robertson simply smiled, used his napkin to dab the food off his clothes, and went back to his dinner conversation. My dad saw this as a sign of true class (interestingly, Anthony Bourdain was a line cook at the Rainbow Room during this time, and mentions the incident in his book). A true gentleman through and through, he will be missed.

I think it's an interesting coincidence that both he and the new Uncle Ben in the forthcoming Spider-man movie, Martin Sheen, played JFK.

RIP Mr Robertson.
