Clash Of The Titans (2009)

^You were hoping the flying horses would be quoting Sartre and the giant scorpians would be doing algebra?

saw it in 2D (£8.50 for 3D vs £6.20 for 2D) and i enjoyed it.

who was the actor playing the older soldier who snapped the recorder in half? i thought it was Bernard Hill but apparently not...

Awesome flick. Original is an old favorite. I enjoyed remembering the old scenes as I watched the reimagined version play out. 2-D is definitely the way to go. I despise 3D films in general and this was never meant to be 3D, anyway. It was filmed as a 2D and only after Avatar made a shit ton of extra money off the 3D tickets did they go back and retool things.

Great cast of characters. All the heroes and villains were memorable. Gemma Arterton is a porcelain goddess. The monsters rocked. Overall, just good stuff.

I would have liked to see more gods actually speaking or doing shit, because they all looked sweet. Was that Siddig as Hermes with one line? And an R rating would have allowed for some more brutal kills and nudity wouldn't have hurt, either.

I'd really like it if they started remaking stuff like Jason and the Argonauts, The Odyssy, The Iliad, the old Sinbad movies or any number of other unused myths and legends using the same style and with the same pantheon of god/actors. I'd buy tickets for that shit.

Things missing that I actually missed:

The Helmet of Invisibility
The Riddle
The Shiny Shield of Shininess (the Scorp shield looked like ass)
Hephaestus and Athena
Dioskilos the two-headed guard dog

-Bubo's cameo was perfect, by the way-

I think most of these could have been worked in like that, with joke dialogue, some better props or an extended scene.

----------

The whole brothers at odds plot with Hades and Zeus was interesting and played out better than the original Thetis is pissy at Zeus' favorites plot of the original. And Hades' character design was great, so bonus points.

One last thing: they should have dedicated the film to Ray Harryhausen, cause Harryhausen is the friggin' man.

Louis wanted Ray to work on it but he refused.

yes, Siddig was Hermes. was Hermes the one who said there was a demigod in Argos? i didn't recognise him, i wasn't even sure if that was Hermes... i'm going off the cast list on iMDB. which listed model Agneyss Deyn (or however she spells her fake name) as Aphrodite.

I checked out the original before going to see the 'remake' today and I wish I hadn't. I think the new Clash while boasting impressive FX lacked the spirit of adventure of the old one. I also didn't like the whole anti-Olympian gods theme.

It didn't feel like much of a remake at all to me. They took a couple names and some scenes from the original, but the look and tone of the film felt different. Most of the changes weren't improvements IMO.

And the designs for the gods were too shiny, gaudy, it looked terrible. I liked the more simple, elegant look of the gods in the old film. I also liked the old designs of Calibos and the Kraken better.

I saw this this afternoon and I really liked it, I just went in for a fun action movie, with some Greek Mythology thrown in, and that was exactly what I got. I actually just watched the original a couple weeks ago, so I had alot of fun comparing things. IBH I actually liked alot of the designs in this one better. The only one I wish they had stayed closer on was Calibos, I think it was alot more interesting when he was more of a monster, and not just a deformed human. I really think that alot of the changes did help the movie fit modern expectations more. Especially the Kraken, I really don't think the old one would have worked as well today as it did back in the '80s. I also really liked the addition of Io, she was pretty cool character, and she was played by Gemma Arterton, and that definitely doesn't hurt.
One of my biggest problems with the movie, is how little screen time Andromeda got. I really liked Alexa Davalos when she was on Angel, so I was hoping see her in a more of her in the movie. I also would have liked to have seen more of the other gods too. They played a pretty big role in the original, but this time they pretty much just stood around and looked shiny.
My rating would be 9/10

The remake is not as good as the original and the 3D is nearly absent. Theaters are now charging extra fees for 3D films, which is not a bad idea due to their added level of entertainment and enjoyment to the movie watching experience. However if films like Clash of the Titans do not deliver the Real 3D experience as adept its predecessors this marketing ploy will come under scrutiny as viewers will opt to view the 2D version. Clash of the Titans (2010) did not only fail to stand up to its original film in the areas of Greek mythology and the relationship between man and the Gods but it also fail to deliver in it’s visual effects that could not compete with those depicted in the original film’s early1980 technology. If you have not seen the original film you may not feel as impartial nevertheless most viewers will be able to notice the lack of the in-your-face action as brought to films by Real 3D technology.

I really agree with pretty much everything you said. I just saw it tonight and since I had heard not so good reviews I was a bit nervous. But I was just expecting a fun action movie. I saw it in 2D and I did like it a lot. The special FX are top notch the story has a nice flow to it and it is very entertaining. Perseus spends most of the movie grouchy with a chip on his shoulder but other than that it is a lot of fun. The scenes with the Kraken are spectacular and need to be viewed on the big screen.

Saw it in 3d rather than 2d, but that was more down to available time. (£6.75 v £5.25) I don't think seeing it in 3d was necessary.

Overall, it was an entertaining flick:)

I thought the original was boring. My cousin fell asleep halfway through it. Not so this time around. I loved it! I, too, recommend seeing it in 2D. I don't think we missed anything by not seeing it in 3D. You could tell which scenes had been reshot in 3D technology.

I was a bit disappointed Perseus didn't fall for Andromeda, but this is a new story and Perseus' destiny lies elsewhere. I liked Io, though. I didn't think I would. On a shallow note, Gemma is absolutely gorgeous.

Is it just me or does Gemma look and sound just like a 15yr younger version of Rachel Weisz?

Wow, can't believe all the people who went to the 3D despite all the horrible reviews about it.

Anyway, it wasn't anything special, but I thought it was a least a decent popcorn flick. The action was pretty good, and it moved fairly fast.

It definitely could have used a greater sense of fun though. The few stabs they made at humor (the Bubo cameo, the wacky soldiers) fell pretty flat.

As for the new monsters, I liked most of them, but Medusa was a HUGE disappointment. Instead of the creepy and frightening original version, we got a generic snake lady with a poorly CGI'd supermodels face. Who hissed a lot. It just didn't convey the right feeling at ALL.

Completely agree.

1) I wanted her to talk! All she did was hiss and giggle ominously.

2) For someone who was supposed to be hideous, her face was way too pretty.

I liked the fact that the Medusa was pretty until you looked her in the eye but I have to admit the CGI for her could have been done better. It looked too CGI.

Medusa was actually cursed for being beautiful. So depictions always have been of mixed opinion, either horrifiyingly ugly or beautiful but with the turn to stone gaze.

My gf and I both totally enjoyed this film. We went in expecting a series of over-the-top performances and action pieces with big ol' monsters, and that's what we got. Loved the new Kraken and Perseus' crew was a great collection of characters. I enjoyed the action sequences, and seeing Liam and Ralph ham it up together was fun. Also, loved the Bubo!

Complete, utter and total crap. It's a $2 movie with a $10 price tag.

There is never any opportunity to give a crap about any of these characters. Why should we care about Andromeda? Why do we care about Argos? There's no substance there. I'd care about Perseus if he weren't so much of a prick. And what is with Pegasus? He just swoops in at the end and picks up Perseus just in a nick of time. Why?

The original was a love story and, while it may have had its flaws, it produced characters that you actually gave a shit about. This modern re-imagining takes way too many cues from 300 and pays no respect to the original material.

Very much enjoyed it. I think some, though not all of the bad reviews are due to overattatchment to the original.

The 3D was pasted on and wasted, like coloring a BnW film. Other than that, I enjoyed it.

Io was totally hot.

Well, giving her a pretty face made her a lot less scary in this movie.
