Clash Of The Titans (2009)

A second trailer has leaked with glimpses of Medusa and Pegasus, and a pretty good look at the Kraken.

Giving the Kraken a few tentacles is a creative way to blend the creature from the original film with the one of legend. They also look slightly reminiscent of the octopus tentacles in 'It Came From Beneath the Sea,' which is a nice touch, if intentional.

That was nice. Medusa, Kraken and Pegasus look good.

I can't decide which tagline is worse though :p:

Damn the Gods or Titans will Clash ?
Probably Titans...

Wow, that new trailer is pretty badass. I'm a bit bummed that the Kraken was so radically changed... but I have to admit the new design IS pretty fearsome-looking.

Medusa looks pretty cool too from the brief glimpses we got.

OMG!!! That redesigned Kraken is amazing!!

Another movie I can't wait to see!!

Here are two images from the second trailer.

Is this guy Calibos? (if he's in it, of course)

A bit surprised that they showed The Kraken already -- I'd have thought that would be kept under wraps. But everything about this film looks fantastic. As for story, I expect it to be a bit like the trailers thus far: loud, obnoxious, nearly inexplicable, but entertaining.

If there's some craft to the story or characters I will be pleasantly surprised.

^ Some trailers like to keep some things a secret, others like to tell you the entire story from start to finish and give away every plot point (Arlington Road, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, Office Space, Snake Eyes). Hell, the Star Trek III trailer showed the Enterprise blowing up! Could you imagine "No, I am your father" being in the Empire Strikes Back trailer?

Cool. That's a pretty heavy duty trailer. I hope, however, that there is more to it than just monsters and action. But it sure looks like a great cast.

Apparently it's getting bad reviews, which almost makes me angry. I'm not asking for Shakespeare, but a movie like this shouldn't be too difficult to get right.

^Octopi have arms not tentacles. Tentacles are longer than arms and suckers are only on the tips.

I'll probably still give it a shot. Most of the critics seemed really distracted and put off by the bad 3D, so hopefully the 2D version will at least be a LITTLE better.

Plus I'm just in the mood for a big, dumb FX movie this weekend. :)

So.... I knew all about the poor 3D conversion going into it, but decided to see Clash in 3D anyway as I thought I'd still be okay with it. Big mistake! Seriously, I strongly encourage everybody to see this in 2D.

The 3D was so distracting and all over the place that as soon as the 3D show ended, I switched over to a 2D showing and watched the last half of the film again in 2D, and it was SO much better! All of the creatures (particularly Medusa) look much more convincing in 2D. I honestly think if they had skipped the 3D conversion and just went 2D all the way that the film would be garnering much better reviews, many of which seem to be just a backlash against the 3D conversion.

As for the movie itself, I'd give it a solid B, and I greatly enjoyed it for the most part.

*** Minor spoilers follow ***

As a huge fan of the original, the remake is a nice homage but definitely lacks the heart of the 1981 film. 2010 Perseus lacks some of the nobility of 1981 Perseus. It's much more of a revenge tale this time around than Perseus trying to rescue his lover. The Perseus/Andromeda romance is sadly missing, and its absence really takes away from the urgency of the Kraken attack at the end, as Andromeda is almost a non-character in this version. That said, Io is a fantastic addition that I liked very much, particularly as she started to fall for Perseus.

The brief cameo of
Bubo
, who I actually enjoyed very much in the original film (so shoot me), was somewhat shocking because it was literally the exact same character from the first film, right down to the sounds he was making. I was expecting a "kewl" redesign so was really pleased to see him return, however briefly, and completely untouched by modern technology.

Plot issue: At one point, the witches give Perseus a strange revelation that really never pays off in any way other than to provide some additional (unneeded) suspense, but it just seems odd that this plot point is completely forgotten as the film goes on.

It was nice to see some of the classic white flying horses before being introduced to the "cooler" (I suppose) dark Pegasus. I actually quite liked Medusa in 2D, particularly her beauty that shifts into something terrible as she stones people. I do miss the slow, tense buildup of the original Medusa scene, but the speed and "sexy factor" of the new Medusa is kinda neato in its own way.

I have a great deal of healthy nostalgia for the original Calibos, so while I think the new Calibos lacks the scary factor of the original, I do think the new backstory for him was pretty cool, particularly his history with Perseus. And Calibos remains a very tragic character in the remake, especially after he confronts Perseus a 2nd time outside Medusa's lair.

I miss the original Kraken, but I definitely loved seeing Pegasus riding around with Perseus on his back and looking incredibly believable, a far cry from the first film's flight scenes.

The ending was a bit of a surprise, seemingly leaving Sam's Perseus with a much different destiny than that of Harry Hamlin's Perseus.

All in all, a good film, made much better if you're a fan of the original because it lets the highlights of the 1981 film come alive again with modern visuals. I know some reviewers are giving the story and acting crap, but I had no trouble with them keeping in mind that this is a "reimagination" of the original, basically. It was never meant to be Shakespeare.

Recommended, but don't make my mistake of seeing it in 3D. I definitely endorse good old reliable 2D for this one.

Not to mention that the so-called "original" was a rather loose reimagining of the actual original myth of Perseus, with bits and pieces of other Greek myths thrown in (such as Pegasus, which was the steed of Bellerophon, not Perseus, and was actually born from Medusa's dead body).

I thought the original was boring. My cousin fell asleep halfway through it. Not so this time around. I loved it! I, too, recommend seeing it in 2D. I don't think we missed anything by not seeing it in 3D. You could tell which scenes had been reshot in 3D technology.

I was a bit disappointed Perseus didn't fall for Andromeda, but this is a new story and Perseus' destiny lies elsewhere. I liked Io, though. I didn't think I would. On a shallow note, Gemma is absolutely gorgeous.

I just hope Harry Potter looks good in 3D. It was against gimmicking the final HP film from the beginning. WB better not screw that up.

I took my 13 year old daughter to see it today. I was undecided about 3d or not 3d, that was the question. But due to showtimes, we went with the 3d version.

So, I understand that the movie was originally shot in 2d, and this was a fairly new process for adding 3d after the fact. I didn't have as high expectations as for other movies.

I think the process was fine, but there is no real point in adding the 3d if the film wasn't shot with that in mind. Yes it added some depth perception but it really didn't add to enjoyment. That said, technically I think the post production 3d effect works, it doesn't look totally crap. I think that a 3d movie really needs to be filmed with 3d in mind, in terms of choice of shot, perspective, etc. This technique is basicly like colorizing a black and white film.

OK, on to the movie, we both really liked it. My daughter was a fan of a cartoon a couple of years ago called "Class of the Titans" and at the time I had fun watching it with her and explaining where they got the title from. She went on to get interested in Greek myths and we enjoyed the Percy Jackson books (hated the movie but that is another thread). Me, I was also a fan of the 80's movie.

So with this in mind, we both really enjoyed the movie. Especially we both came to like all of the characters and were saddened when each of them got killed as the quest progressed. That was a credit to the acting and scripting, I thought there was a good job done all around.

They crammed a lot of story into 100+ minutes and it was nicely paced, it didn't seem to jump abruptly, each event flowed from the next.

I agree that Andromeda could have used more contact with Perseus and more connection there, it would have made his final race to the Kraken more personal and compelling, but really there was plenty of motivation. I think making it too much of a love story between them simplifies the tale a little too much, the Greek heroes didn't always just boil down to "save the princess and win the kingdom". This movie stepped away from that cliche and that was to it's credit.

So really, never a dull moment, the effects were superb in 2d and passable in 3d, and we definately had a good time. The makers of Percy Jackson should have waited a year and watched this movie first.

As Roger Ebert said, the point is another $5 out of your wallet per ticket.

This movie was ridiculous. It would be fine for a 10-year old, but I was hoping for something a little more intelligent.
