Clark meeting Lex later than earlier (Smallville)

What different would Smallville had been if Clark hadn't met Lex until he entered college where he and Lex would have been classmates?

So you want them to be the same age as well?

Lex was at least 5 years Clark's senior.

Which didn't stop him bedding Lana much.

It would have been a completely different series. I believe that Lex was meant to be around 18 or 19 at the time of the first season. If the two of them met at college for whatever reason it would have been a completely different show in terms of their dynamic. Their friendship is the heart and soul of the series early years. Who would you suggest as the antagonist before Clark meet's Lex? Yeah I don't like this premise at all.

The antagonist would have been Lionel Luthor, Lex's father. And we all know how much of an awesome Big Bad he can be. There are also meteor freaks and ordinary criminals that Clark can fight aganist.

Clark's friendship with Pete, Chloe, and Lana would have been the heart and soul of the show's early years. They along with Mr. and Mrs. Kent would have been his Scooby Gang like Xander, Willow, and Giles were to Buffy. Meanwhile, before Lex's first appearance in the beginning of Season 5, there would have been mentions of him from time to time like Lionel making some casual remark of his son when talking with someone.

Lionel was created as a supporting character for Lex. Having him be the villain without Lex doesn't make sense to me. Part of the reason why he was so great was that connection he had with Luthor. Take that away and again you've got a completely different series. I don't like the idea of giving Clark a "Scooby Gang" either. There shouldn't be that many people who know his secret. I do kind of like the idea of Jonathon and Martha playing the role of Giles but they essentially served that role of mentor in Smallville proper. So yeah I've gotta pass on this idea Joe. :) These suggestions in my opinion do not "fix" the flaws the series had. They just create an entirely different one IMO.

No worries. Just was vocalizing my opinion :) The only way I could see a Scooby Gang working is if Clark tells Lana straight away and they're together. Then you've got Pete there and Chloe working with them but without that knowledge. I dunno. I get where you are coming from with it I just personally don't think it would work very much.

Pete was Scoobie.

I just finished watching the fourth season of Superboy last night, and that is exactly where Lex and Clark met, not that in the first season the writers had to work around the fact they hired a kid to play Superboy who could not act his way out of a wet paperbag.

You have a high threshold of tolerance for pain, don't you? Not that I've seen Superboy.

After Voyager, anything is tolerable.

The replacement Luthor they shipped in after season two was very MarkHammillanian superb.

Near the end they had an episode where Superboy hooked into a Virtual reality where he lived out Luthor's Child hood, complete with the child abuse, and then it came to a fork where Superboy who believed he was Luthor was either going to murder his parents for their life insurance... Or not?

Y'know, nature vs. Nurture.

I don't like the idea of everyone being in on Clark's secret so early. However I would've had Pete find out very early on in season one that way Pete could cover more for Clark and we would've been spared a lot of angst over the secret during those early seasons. That way Clark wouldn't come of so douchbag so often. Lana should've been told much earlier of course probably around season 2 after the tornado incident. She should've figured it out and then perhaps not tell him she knew and secretly help him out sometimes. By the end of season 2 or in season 3 Clark would know she knew.

But Lex should've been there from the beginning. He was the mirror image of Clark and there was just too much to explore with that. Plus Lionel being older than Clark and them being at odds all the time would've been kind of creepy. It just came off better with Lex being just a little older.
