CIA Station Chief Accused of Rapes

I will remind everyone that in civilised societies, innocence is presumed until guilt can be proven.

Quite true. I'm sure Mr. Warren will have his day in court. Notice I did say "alleged." They're pretty shocking allegations, though. BTW, I think it's hilarious that you have Bobby "the Brain" Heenan in your avatar, Hermiod. -- RR

^It is indeed.

For now, all they are is allegations. Anyone can make those. When it comes to rape allegations, however, people have a tendency to bypass the legal system and go straight to the execution.

Indeed... That is especially disconcerting when some studies say that the percentage of reported rapes which are false can be as high as 40%.

When you consider that only an average of 3% of rape cases end in a conviction, it's not difficult to do the maths & work out that many many individuals are getting away with rape.

UK statistics.

Look at this statistic for the year 2007 in Scotland

Reported rapes - 922
Cases prosecuted - 64
Convictions - 27

Now, even if we take the astronomically high figure of 40% of rape allegations being false, that would still mean that out of every 500 rapes, less than 70 are prosecuted & of those less than 30 end in a successful conviction. Now that is one hellishly shocking statistic.

In lay mans terms you could say that for every 1000 rapes, 940 are getting away with it.

^I'm not suggesting that rape is not under reported, but the possibility of false accusation does not help real victims but it certainly does ruin the lives of those on the receiving end.

The media in this country has a tendency to act as judge, jury and executioner in these cases. All I was asking was that people be careful not to automatically assume these accusations are true.

Absolutely agree with you on both counts. A person who reports a false allegation of rape is damaging not only the accused, but the potential for future cases to be successfully prosecuted. Goodness knows it's difficult enough to prosecute rape without that.

Also yes, it is important not to jump to conclusions until a person has had their day in court. Again though, as can be seen by the statistics, most are getting away with it.

Unfortunately with the CIA usually where there's smoke there's fire and the CIA has been a grave source of shame, incompetence and embarrassment for the people of the United States. They claim to be serving the United States but the CIA have been given too many blank cheques over the years and never had to be made accountable for their huge list of failures. The CIA getting into bed with extremist Afghan mujaheddin in the 80s(by their logic Binladen's buddies destroyed the USSR), the CIA were drug running in S.America for Irangate, false evidence for WMDgate or Iraqgate costing the lives of thousands of troops and perhaps their biggest failure - The CIA not been able to to jack about 911 despite the books full of 911 evidence prior to the attacks about some Muslim Terrorist dudes who only wanted to learn how to take over flying an aircraft and didn't give a damn about landing it - even somebody born blind and deaf could foresee a problem with this muslim extremist thing. I wouldn't be surprised if the allegations turn out to be true and I would give even less of a damn about some CIA spook who gets the book thrown at him when their actions have already been a source of embarrassment and shame for the United States.

Thomas Jefferson opposed instruments of torture because he knew America is better than that and something like this would only backfire serving as propaganda for the enemy.

That was all done with the knowledge and tacit blessing of the Regan Presidential administration; and is one of the MAIN reasons the Berlin wall fell (after Gorbechev basically 'sold' East Germany to Regan for 10 billion in hard U.S. currency).

...false evidence for WMDgate or Iraqgate costing the lives of thousands of troops...

Well, notr entirely true either, Dick Cheney was DEMANDING the CIA find either a link between Saddam and Al-Qaida; and when they said, "Sorry, we can't..."; Cheney create a new Intelligence Department within the U.S. Department of Defense; and then twisted what they reported so he could go on the Sunday talk circut of shows and drum up support by using himself as the 'un-named whitehouse source' whose comment were 'verified by U.S. Intelligence services'.

...and perhaps their biggest failure - The CIA not been able to to jack about 911 despite the books full of 911 evidence prior to the attacks about some Muslim Terrorist dudes who only wanted to learn how to take over flying an aircraft and didn't give a damn about landing it - even somebody born blind and deaf could foresee a problem with this muslim extremist thing. Well, BOTH the FBI and the CIA share the blame on this one (Hell, the FBI HAD one of the Terrorist's laptop PCs with data on the impending attacke; but no one bothered to actually look at the data it had until AFTER 9/11/2001). Also, the George W. Bush administration didn't help matters much afterwards as the PREVENTED the FBI from questioning ANY of Osama Bin-Laden's relative taht were IN teh U.S. at the time; and actually had them FLOWN OUT of the U.S. while all other U.S. air traffic was grounded.

So, yeah, the CIA aren't angels per se; and they certainly aren't entirely bameless; but don't cruify the Agency for following the directions of the Commander In Chief; as that's what they are supposed to do.

Thomas Jefferson opposed instruments of torture because he knew America is better than that and something like this would only backfire serving as propaganda for the enemy.

Again, don't blame te CIA for the policies and actions that were ENDORSED and ORDERED by both Donald Rumsfeld; and the reviously sitting U.S. President of the last 8 years; George W. Bush.

^"Just following orders," eh, Noname Given? Guess who else used that excuse? The Nazis. -- RR

That's not the way it was meant; but you do have a point - still, the actions taken by the CIA were more due to policy decisions made by the Executive Branch of the U.S. government. One thing Master of Orion left out was all the south american govenment toppling the CIA engaged in because some poor Bananna Repulic Leader mentioned 'nationalizing'. But again, the U.S. corporations complained to Nixon; and Nixon sent in the CIA.
