Chrysalis - oh gawd...

The wife and I are making our way through the DVDs - she's not really seen the show before - and today we got to season 7's Chrysalis.

I'd actually - and I consider myself pretty well up on Trek! - forgotten the genetically modded bunch came back for a second episode. Or more accurately, I'd blanked it from my memory, cos...

it's SO FUCKING BORING!

(The wife agrees)

Gawd, it's excrutiating! DS9 is probably my favourite Trek series, and I don't remember any of it being this bad!

Urgh....

I'm not sure I've ever used the phrase "worst episode ever" but... well, it is!

Not only is it boring, but it also completely unwatchable other than for the very first scene where Patrick is messing with Nog's head. Plus it ruined the value of the Jack Pack which were all great characters at the end of their first appearance in a brilliant previous episode.

Definitely an embarrassment and one of DS9's top 5 very worst. DS9 does have other episodes that match it's level of complete & utter crap though, Ie: Melora, Fascination etc. etc.

I guess I'm the weird one of the bunch. I didn't much mind this ep. It wasn't a classic by any stretch of the imagination but I didn't think it was horrible. Oh well...

I don't know, I liked Sarina in it. I thought her line about Ezri "The day she realizes that she's more than just the sum of her parts, she's really going to be something" was quite profound.

It was a generic trek "Love em and lose em" episode, but without those trek romance would have little more than the long-term relationships that happen once or twice a series.

it's SO FUCKING BORING!
Wait until you get to Prodigal Daughter. Compared to that one, Chrysalis is heart-attack-inducingly exciting.

Prodigal Daughter came before Chrysalis so they have likley already seen it.

I don't think Chrysalis was as awful as some of the worst Ferengi episodes or as bad as the Vanessa Williams episode (Let He Who Is Without Sin). Still it was a waste of time and its another example of many oportunities squandered in the final season. Back during that final year TPTB hinted at that one reason why they brought back the Jack Pack was to give Bashir a possible love interest. Well the chemistry between Bashir and Sarina never happens and she is not brought back for extra appearances towards the end of the final season as originally planned/hoped. So in the end we get an episode that was pointless just because the writers did not do a better job of planning and laying out how the entire season should play out. This led to too many fluff episodes and frankly I was a bit ticked off the Bashir got a "do over" when TPTB decided to make Ezri his love interest instead (inspired in part by that bs scene earlier in the season in which Ezri tells Bashir that if it wasn't for Worf Jadzia would have chosen him...seriously does anyone buy that outside of some flirting here and there that Jadzia was even close to displaying any feelings of true love towards Bashir? Only those Jadzia-Julian shippers from back in the day felt that way but frankly to me they were no better than the Kira-Dukat shippers).

Yeah, Jadzia liked Julian as a friend but never showed a trace of romantic interest in him. Then again, I could never for the life of me see what she was in Worf. He was one of the most miserable people in the galaxy, never happy about anything. What's the appeal there?

This episode is far from great. But it's hardly a stinker.

There are far more worthy candidates for this type of singling out.

Prodigal Daughter (episode 7.11) is after Chrysalis (episode 7.5)...

Nah, it's the worst. I vaguely remember Prodigal Daughter (it's the one about Bilby's daughter, dragged down by the Ezri's brother plotline). Let He Who Is Without Sin is objectionable on loads of levels (mainly that Worf's character is trashed, then proves that you can do anything in Starfleet up to and including joining a terrorist group, but if you quit like Eddington you're obviously evil) but it's not as dire as this episode was. Even Profit And Lace had some worthy moments.

Nope, this is the worst DS9 I've seen

Prodigal Daughter was a terrible episode too, but still nowhere near as horrendous as Chrysalis.

Child Of Time - also dull, but the adult Molly's nice to look at...

Time's Orphan, actually. You're getting mixed up with Children of Time, the one where futureOdo retroactively wipes out a colony of the Defiant's descendants to save Kira.

I always loved Chrysalis. I like the fact that it isn't your usual Trek romance. If you're watching closely, Sarina never indicates any romantic interest in Bashir at all. It's just him seeing things that aren't there. And I think there's something very tragic about that.

It also helps that the episode brings back the Jack Pack. ;)

And who doesn't love the Do-Re-Mi scene?

Children of Time and Chrysalis were decent episodes. i never cared for 'The Emperor's New Cloak' at all.

That's the most cringingly-awful, embarrassing, totally unwatchable scene in all of Trek.

I'm not sure I would go quite THAT far...but it WAS awfully contrived, and did not have anything like the impact on me that it seems to have had on others.

But then I seem to have very different tastes in episodes from some people: for instance, I hear a lot of "Covenant"-bashing, but I thought that one was extremely well done.
