Christopher Meloni Exits Law & Order: SVU

Surely he'll at least be around to wrap up the storyline. Having him just leave would be a slap in the face.

If they don't give Elliot Stabler some real closure, it's really going to be a spit in the face to the audience. Stabler and Benson have *BEEN* this show for 12 years. To just lose one without explanation? Unacceptable!

This fucking sucks! *RAGE*!!!

PS: Jennifer Love Hewitt?! Seriously?!

Ugh...

Law & Order is DEAD. The whole franchise. It's dead now!

The original canceled one season shy of BREAKING the record, only able to tie it with dumbass Gunsmoke?
Law & Order LA sucked from page one.
Criminal Intent was always the "Vincent D'Onofrio plays a weird guy" showcase and stunk except the brief time Chris Noth was on.

Ugh. I'm fucking pissed now!

Another good series going down the drain, however the bells started to toll when they dumped Casey Novak.

Fortunately NCIS, CSI NY and CSI Miami are still going and still watchable, especially NCIS. :techman:

The original CSI lost it all when Grissom left.

I think with Meloni leaving and Hargitay relegated to a lesser role next season, it will be interesting to see if the show can stand on it's own two legs. I never watched the show for them anyways.

I can see Ice-T being paired up with the rumored Jennifer Love Hewitt, which I am really interested to see. I love Richard Belzer as Munch, but if they aren't going to use him, why bother having him there? Same pretty much goes for Tamara Tunie as Warner: she gets star billing for ten seconds of screen time? I'd be sad to see Dann Florek go.

SVU needs to focus on the writing and distance themselves from this angsty Stabler/Benson relationship they've had going on for so long. It did the show no favors.

I agree with a lot of what you had to say here. I've been an off and on watcher of SVU (generally binge on the USA marathons), but it is my favorite of the L&O shows. It seems like the later shows focus too much on Benson and Stabler as opposed to focusing on the stories. Perhaps going back to that format might save this show. It sucks that Stabler is going and Benson will have a reduced role and likely will be exiting too.

However, it would be cool to see Ice-T and Munch take center stage. Though I doubt that will happen. I don't necessarily dislike Jennifer Love Hewitt, but I would hope they would get someone a little older, or with more gravitas. They need someone like Ellen Barkin, Rebecca DeMornay, Virgina Madsen, come to mind. Hey Jennifer Beals is free now, and she has some experience playing a cop.

should have happened 9 years ago, the first season set up the show as a revolving door for detectives with the whole "the average rate for an officer in the SVU is 2 years" deal, SVU would have been so much better if they would have rotated out their "A-team" every couple of seasons

I agree with folks saying why have Munch if you aren't going to use him, and I'm saying the show, SVU was at its best when Munch and Fin were treated as equal in time and position to Benson and Stable. If you are part and losing the latter, well then you need to return the former to their cop glory.

It would be amazing if to help tied over the Meloni departure if Braugher made a guest appearance. I would just die if Bolander could appear. Melissa Leo is on Treme now. Even though that is another Simon show with the same crew and all, it would be tough to put a contemporary New Orleans based show in the same universe.

A Kellerman appearance would be fun, too, him and his big Irish cocoon per Munch. Diamond, however, always seems to be on shortlived shows now, or gets small parts, like Judging Amy or that two ep thing for The Shield. I loved loved Journeyman. I don't think another lawyer show on TNT is going to make it. They seem to turn over the concept every 2 years.

Maybe NBC should put HLOTS on 10 pm Tuesday and see what the ratings are like? Truly the moment they dropped the Homicide connections in SVU, even began directly contradicting it and its own earlier seasons, the show went to crap.

My sister isn't going to be happy with Stabler leaving, but I don't even know if she still watches the reruns, let alone new seasons. Maybe LO should just concentrate on reasonable dvd releases and streaming of the archive.

Everyone on SVU who did a chunk of the show has gotten a reason and episode for their departure when first leaving. If they don't do that with Melloni, whose character has been the most prominent of them all for 12 years, the few remaining fans are going to revolt in droves.

I will be one of them.

I'm OCD about TV shows I like. I watch them all, straight through, for decades when applicable. Even as they go down the drain. I don't quit on shows I love(d). But I will quit and walk away cold turkey on SVU if they do not have some closure for Stabler.

And if I'm that pissed to do that, imagine how pissed "normal" viewers might be?

NBC needs to put on their big-boy pants, give Melloni whatever money he wants for a few episode stint, and write him off in acceptable fashion for the character.

It's that simple.

I don't watch SVU on TV when it airs - I normally watch it via the can't-possibly-avoid-'em reruns on USA.

But I have no interest in that show without Benson, Stabler, and Munch. So I won't be watching after they exit (or make a 'near exit' as it appears Hargitay is doing).

Networks have a nasty habit of doing one of two things - cancelling a show too soon, before it can develop an audience....or cancelling a show too late just to get the last dime out of it, thus ruining the show's legacy. In SVU's case, it looks like it's headed for the latter.

There is no reason whatever to keep this show going once they split up Benson and Stabler. More than any of the other L&O shows, this show has been about THEIR partnership. Like it or not. And once that's done, there is nothing new for this show to do that hasn't been done on SVU or one of the other incarnations of L&O.

Pack it in - call it a day, is my vote.

My favourite character is leaving my favourite show. You can imagine how not-happy I am with this :( :(

They'd better give a proper send off. I will be beyond pissed off if they don't. I can see what happened in the season 12 finale leading up to it. As soon as I watched that episode, I knew it would have a massive effect on him. Stabler's top two rules are that you punish bad guys and you protect kids. His shooting and killing a kid to protect a bad guy is bound to screw him up.

And, although I kinda like Jennifer Love Hewitt, I really cannot see her as a NY cop.

I stopped watching SVU with series 10, just seemed like they had done what they needed to do and like others I was a bit disappointed with Munch and Ice-T being sidelined.

Personally I'm content to have the show wrap. I probably should get the UK version, but seeing them just re-work scripts from the original show put me off a bit. I'd rather see brand-new stories.
