Christmas Special soundtrack CD announced

It seems like only about 6 months ago people were mumbling about there being a lack of soundtrack CDs. Looks like the powers that be are making up for lost time. According to Blogtor Who, Silva Screen Records has announced the release of a soundtrack CD for A Christmas Carol, to be released in February 2011.

This confirms reports that Murray Gold has once again written a Christmas special song, which will be performed by Katherine Jenkins in the show and on the CD. Since she's apparently really big in the UK (less so in North America) there's a chance this could be a pretty good-selling CD. I know Gold runs hot and cold with some people, but I've greatly enjoyed the songs he's composed for the show so far and was disappointed they didn't have Kylie Minogue sing one for Voyage of the Damned.

This isn't the first time Silva Screen has devoted an entire CD to one episode - back in the 1990s it also released soundtrack CDs for The Curse of Fenric, The Greatest Show in the Galaxy and I think one or two others. There was also a soundtrack CD put out for the TV movie, but only in limited release.

So unless I missed something, they announced details to a Christmas Special soundtrack before they announced the details to a Series Five soundtrack? Interesting.

The series five soundtrack is still not available in North America. This is fantastic news regarding "A Christmas Carol". February is gonna be an expensive month.

can't wait for this to come out... I found season 5 just fine a few weeks ago on iTunes... :s

*Goes off to order a copy of the CD for Series 5 from Amazon.co.uk...*

Oops! Did I say that aloud?

(OK to be fair I understand there seem to be weird import rules in the US that forbid people from ordering import CDs from the UK. I guess that's the case. I'm in Canada and we don't even have a free trade agreement with the UK and I've never had a problem. But I get the impression if you live in the US you can't. Seriously, though, my point is are iTunes downloads really the only option? Personally, I hope to be able to still enjoy listening to stuff like Abigail's Song 4-5 years from now so I'm quite happy to order the disc, even if I have to pay a few bucks extra.)

I can't wait to see what Murray has in store music wise for series six/seven. We'll most likely have something to look forward to at the end of this year as well.

The Series Five Soundtrack is now listed on Amazon Canada for $25.99 Canadian and set for release on Feb 8th, 2011. I've had mine for a couple months now and it is by far my favorite soundtrack since series three.

There's absolutely no reason a U.S. buyer cannot import a CD from the UK via, say, Amazon.co.uk or the like. I imported the Specials soundtrack from Amazon UK last year. So, US customers, feel free to order away! :)

^ His best work since series three in my opinion.

Now that you mention it, i gave season 3 a re-listen on my ipod and it is great. Forgot how great it was. Especially the family of blood tracks.

I havnt got the christmas soundtrack though, i have the 2 disc season 5 set and its its awesome. a lot more than what we got for previous releases. But besides that, his work has improved greatly since 2005. Wasnt a fan of season 1 or 2 music, then as we said, season 3 it got better on a bigger scale, then he was awarded his own bbc prom which must have given him a grin from here to Paris, how awesome. Then we have this work. Itll be interesting to see what season 6 has in store.

This season 5 score has, as mofat/smith/gillan etc all said in the confidentials about the episodes themselves, the score also has a real fairy tail sound, obviously intentional, but when i listen to these discs i can hear the sounds you associate with such fairy tales and fantasy. I can get a sound there thats not too dis-similar to that of John Williams (mentioned in the Conf. that the director piped Indiana Jones music into the pandorica set to get the mood from the actors. Which is just awesome).

Havnt listened to the specials soundtrack yet though, so ill reserve judgement on those until i can find it.

The specials soundtrack was good...but all of Murray's best stuff is saved for The End of Time disc. There is some great stuff like the Christmas music for "The Next Doctor" and a couple of tracks from "The Waters of Mars" but otherwise it was meh for me. Series Four had brilliant tracks but not enough consistency throughout the entire series for me...no doubt there will be others who will suggest that there are tracks missing that should have been there, I can't recall the music right now. Series Five just has great music all through it...consistent epicness. Right now I'm very partial to "Amy's Theme".

I would love it if they released a high quality Proms 2010 cd. i have the music via being copyed from the recorded show, but a quality cd release would be awesome.

I'll have to relisten to season 3 but I've always loved the season 4 soundtrack especially from "Silence in the Library" to the end. The specials soundtrack didn't do it for me (except for "The Waters of Mars" tracks) but season 5 was just as fantastc.

What I really want is a Murray Gold Doctor Who Unreleased Music Double Disc album. There were rumors last year that there might be one (as the second disc with the specials) but they were false. There is still such great music not released on disc.
