Christmas on the Enterprise

Uhura and Gaila getting drunk and making out, while Kirk and Spock watch and nod appreciatively.

A Christmas tree in the turbolift alcove and tinsel strung around the perimeter consoles.

Mistletoe hanging from Kirk's belt.

Drunk Keenser, while stringing up lights, falling from a catwalk in engineering and being rushed to sickbay.

Angry Drunk Spock beats up Kirk again.

Sulu and Chekov getting drunk and making out, while everyone watches on horrified.

Old Spock as the Ghost of Christmas Future, showing Kirk how old and round he'll become.

Kirk somehow dangling precariously from somewhere really high up, because that's just how he rolls.

Scotty combining a replicator and trans-warp beaming to deliver presents to children on needy planets.

As would be the communications officer Uhura had Spock bum so she could go along with her boyfriend.

12 warp cores ejecting

11 Phasers Firing

10 Ships exploding

9 Redshirts dead

6 Assests for Kirk to check

5 Klingon Battleships

4 Nasty Burns

3 Bones Being pissed

2 Checkov's Chanting

1. Nero dead

And a Lens Flare in everyone's eye

Isn't Gaila dead? I thought she was assigned to one of the ships that were destroyed by Nero.

We see her spin around to Uhura all excited by her posting, but we don't hear where she was posted to. Uhura herself is miffed by the posting she gets, and complains to Spock to change her post to the Enterprise. So... it's very possible that Gaila was excited to get Enterprise as her post, making her roommate, Uhura, even more miffed.

Later, in the cut scenes (available on the DVD/Blu-Ray), Kirk is shown duping/co-opting Gaila into sending Kirk's computer worm that rewrites the Kobayashi Maru scenario. Later, he apologies to an Orion crewmember for his poor behaviour, and the woman realises he's mistaken her for Gaila. (ie. All green girls look alike.) That Kirk assumed she was Gaila may be a hint that he knows that Gaila is a crewmember of the Enterprise.

Or he simply saw a green woman and assumed that she was. Gaila could have been posted to Enterprise instead of Uhura. When Spock switched Uhura's assignment Gaila may have been sent to one of the other ships. You know, the ones that went BOOM.

Of course. But since we aren't told that it's all open to interpretation.

The first two "Academy"-based YA novels have featured Gaila (she's even on the cover of one), so if she's building a fanbase out there, she will probably survive to appear in post-movie novels eventually.

I'm sure there were escape pods and survivors amongst the wreckage over Vulcan... assuming they weren't all sucked into the black hole. Some pods or shuttles may have landed elsewhere on Delta Vega, or at least gotten out of the danger zone.

Gaila may yet live!
