Chris Nolan looking for "Superman" director

They want this to come out the same year as the Batman sequel? I don't know if that's a good idea. WB would be in competition with itself.
They're planning for them to come out in the same year, but not in the same season. Batman would be released in the summer and Superman at Christmas.

Yep Batman I think is coming out a week or so after the "Spider-Man" reboot so Sony has something scary to think about lol.

Interesting choices.

Duncan Jones: I've not seen anything by him, though he seems to have geek cred. No opinion.

Zack Snyder: I don't like his style that much. 300 and Watchmen were both various degrees of good, but it's not what I want out of Superman.

Tony Scott: A very solid choice actually. Man on Fire and Crimson are both solid movies.

Matt Reeves: Interested to see what he'd do. I liked Cloverfield and the directing on Let Me In looks pretty exquisite even though its pretty close to the existing Swedish film.

Out of those, Tony Scott strikes me as a pretty good option. None of them blow me away though.

I'd totally watch a Duncan Jones Superman. (I'd watch a Duncan Jones Paint Dries.) But I'd hate to see him follow Chris Nolan--that is, wasting his time and talent making blockbuster superhero films when he's not all that good at it.

On the other hand, Duncan Jones adapting "For the Man Who Has Everything" seems like it would play directly into his strengths. I'd say it might even make Alan Moore eat some well-deserved crow, but if Watchmen didn't, a Jones Superman wouldn't either. Still, I doubt that would be the direction a studio would ever go in, even though I'd love to see a cosmic, Krypton-centric Superman film instead of the same crap on Earth for once.

Zack Snyder would be also great choice, if they plan on shooting an adaptation of a specific comic. He's really good at that--and I don't mean that in a pejorative way.

I don't know who those other people are.

P.S.: I still say Superman Returns is a good movie. But if, in the rebooting, they finally catch up with John Byrne and 1986, it might be worth it. If so, bring back Spacey!

None of them excite me terribly but I can safely say not Zack Snyder. He wouldn't give us the Superman that the world is wanting now. He would make something closer to Superman Returns on the scale of over homaging, reproducing too closely to the source material. I liked Singer's take but Snyder is that x10.

I think preDomino, Tony Scott, although I liked Domino for what it was, would be good. Ridley would be better. Besides Tony's got Nemesis on deck after Unstoppable (which looks terrible) and Nemesis sounds more up his alley than Superman does.

I watched Moon and although somewhat an original concept compared to other sci fi features last year, was a real slow burn to anything remotely suspenseful. Duncan does look promising as a director but having him helm Superman, something totally larger in scale in comparison to Moon seems a bit bold, maybe a bit hasty to make that decision especially based off one movie. Let him get more projects under his belt first and work his way up. I pretty much feel the same about Marc Webb and NuSpider-Man. You could add Matt Reeves to that category too. Let them work there way up to these bigger properties. But I guess you could say the same about Nolan too though, going from Memento to Insomniac to Batman Begins.

Zack Snyder I feel visually pull it off in terms of tone (granted he doesn't make it look dark, gritty and bleak) and especially FX and action, but still on the fence about him in the direction of his characters. We'll see if Sucker Punch can offer me that mores than Watchmen, 300 and Dawn of the Dead.

My pick would actually be JJ Abrams, although he's way too busy with other big franchises and developing new shows

Directors respond to Superman rumor.

Duncan Jones was the first to comment. Apparently ComingSoon tweeted Jones, who is active on Twitter, and he responded with, "About Superman... I'm going to say something really cheesy; Can't talk about it, but an honor to be on the list. Interesting times!" For some reason I just find that encouraging.

Zach Snyder also commented, but debunked any interest in directing Superman (as he's stated before- WB offered him the chance to direct a Superman movie years ago, before Singer, but after Ratner/McG).

Matt Reeves lastly commented, and his general reaction was that he was surprised and had no idea what was going on. He didn't quite muster up any other noteworthy comment besides just utter shock at the rumor.

I'm pulling for Jones, so I hope this all somehow bodes well for him.

Jones, because IMO the hardest thing about Superman is seeing the character beneath the powers, and I think Moon indicates he has a keen perception of character. For that matter, so does Nolan, which would - hopefully - make for a good working relationship.

If not him, then Reeves. First because Cloverfield proves he can do big, city-shattering threats, and second because it would be awesome to have another guy named Reeves involved in Superman. ;)

Oh, also because the reviews of Let Me In suggest he's done some really excellent work there.

Interesting about Let Me In, I know trailers can be deceiving but shot for shot it looks like the exact same movie as Let the Right One In.

According to the reviews, it is very faithful to the original but Reeves brings enough creative originality to make the film his own.

I suppose this would affect Duncan's "Mute" if he was chosen as the next "Superman" director. The fact that he doesn't want to elaborate is intriguing. Could mean he is having discussions.

I must be the only person on Earth who thinks Superman is perfect with Brad Bird as director...I know with MI4...seriously this is so much more important. IMHO.

I think he would be a good choice, but it also won't happen since as you said he's directing Mission: Impossible IV. Might as well then just forget about it and move onto what could happen verses what can't.

Unless Chris Nolan himself directs...I don't care for the choices laid out...sorry.

It is a shame really. :( I know I haven't been the greatest fan of his Batman films...BB is great and TDK is watchable but I have issues with it...but with his collective filmography...it is a shame he is not directing this movie.

[edit] With SR Singer had an emotional connection to the character...not sure I see that with the guys mentioned.

My fantasy would be to see Bryan Singer direct a sequel to Superman Returns but that's never going to happen. I'm willing to give someone else a chance.

Moon was a really fantastic character piece, proving Duncan Jones knows how to handle character, which is why I'm so excited at the prospect of him directing a Superman movie.
