Chris Nolan Drops The Prisoner Film

I read this from imdb.com it's still up there if you wanna go read it. I guess this frees him up now for Batman 3 next year if he wants to do it early after Inception is finished.

Maybe Bryan Singer can jump in and do an "upbeat" reboot!

Sounds to me like Nolan either realized that he had been beaten to the punch by AMC, or perhaps the script didn't turn out to be as good as was expected.

I still have reservations about ANY update/remake of The Prisoner. The original is such a unique masterpiece that I have doubts that a new version could do it justice.

That being said I thought the Comic-Con preview for the new miniseries was interesting and I'll definitely keep an open mind come November.

Apparently Nolan dropped The Prisoner a while ago; it just wasn't made public until now. I've heard he decided to do Inception as his next project and simply lost interest in making The Prisoner. Personally, I'm really glad. It is very rare these days to see a non-franchise summer blockbuster. Especially coming from one of the most talented directors working today.

That would have to be it. Why would you make a TV series AND a movie at the same time?

Yeah, that's generally not a great idea. I'm still a little leery about this TV remake myself, but I'm still looking forward to it, and I'm still keeping a fairly open mind.

I could see a movie happening if this TV series somehow picks up a really big following. I guess anything is possible.

Well, The X-Files was a little different. The film and television series weren't two different, competing versions of the same property. They were one in the same.

But I find myself glad that Nolan let this one go. I don't see any reason to compete with the AMC version, and I don't see the concept working well in the confines of a two-hour feature (or even a three-hour one).

The Doctor Who people can also be added to the list as there's a recurring rumor of a Tennant film, even with Matt Smith's first episode yet to air.

With The Prisoner, though, there's even less of a point in doing a competing remake. From what I've seen via the 9-minute YouTube trailer, the AMC version is going to hit all the bases; a movie version is going to be superfluous. At least the AMC version is going to be a multi-hour miniseries, giving them a chance to properly tell the story. A 2-hour movie just wouldn't work.

This is different from Star Trek, which was just a case of different stories within the same franchse. Or X-Files, which did a movie in order to shore up interest in the TV show (and the film was released between seasons).

I do feel that it's stupid to be considering another BSG remake, given the TV one isn't even complete yet (with The Plan and Caprica still to come). So there's no need for that one either.

If AMC's The Prisoner works, that'll be terrific. It'll draw people to the McGoohan original, and maybe a followup series could occur (depending what happens in the first one, of course). But I definitely did not want to see a movie version attempted, so this news makes me happy. (Though to be honest I thought the film version of The Prisoner was abandoned several years back anyway.)

Cheers!

Alex

From the thread about the TV show, sounds like the TV show might actually be trying to make the opposite point compared with the original (and presumably also the film). I see no reason why there can't be a TV show and a movie that are unrelated to each other, especially if they are diametrically different. Just like Moore's BSG and the new BSG movie in the works.

Moore's BSG universe and any TV sequels are going to appeal to a niche cult following. Singer's movie no doubt will go for big-blockbuster status and appeal to people who have never even heard of Moore's version. I'll watch everything from Moore's universe and assuming Singer's movie doesn't suck, I'll watch that too (probably wait for DVD tho).
