News Chris Evans to Voice Buzz Lightyear in Origin Movie, Lightyear

Oh, is there an actual Buzz Lightyear movie in real life? I thought the character was an invention of the universe.

If it's a fictional character who inspired a fictional toy in the Toy Story Universe, it'd follow that the character exists in the same universe as the toy, and in that universe, toys are sentient.

Not yet. They haven't made it yet. They will be making a real-life movie that purports to be the in-universe movie that the toy was based on, as you say in your next paragraph.

It's like how in 1952 there was an actual TV puppet show based on Fearless Fosdick, the Dick Tracy parody comic-within-the-comic that the title character of Li'l Abner was fond of. Or like how there are real-world mystery novels that purport to be the novels written in-universe by Jessica Fletcher of Murder, She Wrote and Richard Castle of Castle.

But adults in the Toy Story universe don't know that toys are sentient, so if they made a movie, it would not contain the plot point that toys are sentient.

True, the adults wouldn't know, but the toys would still be there running around in the background whether the adults knew it or not.
 
Weird. You'd think it would be Tim Allen.
Never understood the trend of having a big-name voice in a cartoon. The majority of children won't give a damn who voices the characters. I would save money and just hire better voice actors who are cheaper.

Which wouldn't be relevant within a work of fiction created within the universe, which is what this is apparently supposed to be. The makers of the movie would not know anything about self-aware toys, therefore there would be no self-aware toys in the movie's own version of reality.

Err... Tim Allen is a big-name voice, or certainly he was at the time. And children's movies aren't made exclusively for children, since children can't drive to the theater.
 
But they could use the sentient toys in the form of Easter Eggs to audience members watching closely and get free Internet clickbait, is my point.

They probably wanted to go with a younger actor since this is a origin story. I got the impression from the comments it was going to be more serious, so they also might have wanted to go for someone less comedic.
 
Also, there is plenty of real world precedent for toy recordings to be voiced by different actors than the movie character. If they really wanted to be meta they should have gotten Patrick Warburton to voice him, he was Buzz in the Star Command cartoon. I hope they take some inspiration from that series.
 
Sure, but if he isn't appropriate for the movie, then I'd rather see them pick someone who is.

Hey! Galaxy Quest was a very serious movie.
 
Think of this as akin to a Trek spinoff dedicated to the backstory of Captain Proton. Not connected to any in-universe continuity of Star Trek itself but still using a Star Trek character we've seen on multiple occasions. Part of the Toy Story universe but not beholden to any continuity from the four movies.

I didn't watch the cartoon series so I don't have any issues with this (but I can see why you and other fans wouldn't like it). Looks pretty good for now until we have a clearer idea about the actual plot.

Basically, I have two major issues. One is that the series adds a large cast of fun supporting characters and develops the universe around Buzz, and they've just ignored all of that. The other is that I find the designs shown here to be pretty generic. Buzz just looks like Mr. Less-than-Incredible and he's missing the spiral thing on his chin.
