Choose John Williams' finest two hours

I will say that out of all the Superman themes, Williams' is the best. But I'm sure everyone can agree on that.

That's like asking me to choose my favorite type of chocolate. However, despite the quality of the rest of the movie, Williams score to The Phantom Menace really stood out.

From beginning to end? For me it's a tossup between Return of the Jedi and Jurassic Park. The latter is Williams at the peak of his powers, in a year where he did amazing things with both JP and his score for Schindler's List; together, the two show the full range of his talents. With Jedi, though, that's the summation of themes he had been working on over Star Wars and Empire, and all of it comes together beautifully; Jedi is the weakest of the original trilogy, but his score helps bring up levels of emotion and elevates the material.

I thought Jurassic Park was his least creative score!
But it's truly impossible to choose his best overall score. There are just so many, from the Lost in Space TV series onward. Tho Duel of the Fates may be his most amazing single piece.

"Lost in Space" may have been primarily for young children, but his season 3 theme so far above and beyond in quality that it almost feels like a tease in some aspects.

That and his "Superman" theme and score, but there's nothing of his that isn't great. He can look at any strip of film projected on screen and imagine, put to paper, and have orchestrated the perfect music that elevates whatever it is he just looked at. Truly phenomenal.

It's Raiders of the Lost Ark, clearly. Of course, I also think The Raiders March is superior to the Superman Theme.

Raiders is my all-time favorite, for many reasons, and I find it more appealing than any of the other themes. However, it's John Williams; all of it is good.

For the best total score I'm going to pick one I know no one else will pick: War of The Worlds (2005).

All the other scores mentioned in the thread are great, as expected, but the score for this movie was unique. It wasn't an adventure or a fantasy movie or plain old action film. For this movie he had to describe in music the "rout of civilization." It's the end of the world as we know it, and Williams' score for it was just fine.

Lots of people dump on this film, but I'm one of the few who love everything about it, including all the music.

I'm going unconventional here, but, as much as I love John Williams' "best" work (Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Superman), I just really love his score for Hook (also a criminally underrated Spielberg movie).
