GNR's 'Chinese Democracy' Gets Release Date

October 09, 2008 , 11:40 AM ET
Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.

More than a decade after its conception, Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" will finally see the light of day before year's end, sources close to the situation confirm to Billboard. As first reported here, the set will be a Best Buy exclusive and will be available Sunday, Nov. 23, rather than the usual Tuesday.

Beyond enticing pre-Thanksgiving shoppers, the move is tied to the structure of Best Buy's sales week, which runs from Sunday to Saturday. As such, "Chinese Democracy" would not be eligible to chart on The Billboard 200 until the week of Dec. 1, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

In the run-up to release date, album track "Shackler's Revenge" will debut in the video game "Rock Band 2," while a portion of "If the World" is playing over the end credits in the new Leonardo DiCaprio/Russell Crowe film "Body of Lies."

In addition, GNR's seminal 1987 debut, "Appetite for Destruction," will be reissued on vinyl on Oct. 28 via Interscope.

The band's last new studio albums were the simultaneously released "Use Your Illusion I" and "II" in September 1991. A covers set, "The Spaghetti Incident?," followed in 1993, and featured some of the last GNR recordings from original guitarist Slash and bassist Duff McKagan.

This spring, soft drink manufacturer Dr Pepper offered to send a free can of the beverage to "everyone in America" (excluding ex-GNR members Slash and Buckethead) if "Chinese Democracy" were to arrive anytime during the calendar year 2008.

"We're waiting to hear about 'Chinese Democracy' just like all the other GNR fans," Dr Pepper VP of marketing Tony Jacobs tells Billboard. "But if the rumors are true, we're putting the Dr Pepper on ice."

Is this the final sign of the apocalypse? :wtf:

I'll believe it when I see it. Well, I am not sure anyone, including me, cares a whole heck of a lot about a new GNR album. So I'll believe it when I...see a news story indicating it was, in fact, released.

I'll believe it when I see it sitting on a shelf at an electronics store. In the meantime, I remain sceptical.

But if it does come out, Dr. Pepper had better follow through.

I really don't care. GnR is nothing without Slash. I am more looking forward to Slash's new solo album and for him to get Velvet Revolver kick started again.

This I will buy. Not Chinese Democracy though

I agree that I would be far more interested if this was the REAL GnR, not the GnR that just has Axl these days It's not even close to the same.

Velvet Revolver has been a mixed bag so far. Their two CDs were average IMO. It looks like Scott Weiland is probably out of VR, from what I've been hearing.

Very true. This is not Guns N' Roses. Axl Rose was not what made the band great back in the day. With everyone but Axl gone, I really don't know how interested I am. I'd really be more eager for Velvet Revolver to find a new frontman and get back to work.

Weiland was booted out of Velvet Revolver a while ago. As far as I know, the band is still searching for a new lead singer.

Maybe they could get that Lukas guy from Rock Star: Supernova.

They should start trolling YouTube for a new singer, like Journey.

Chinese Democracy and Duke Nukem Forever both on the horizon . . .

The end is near, my friends.

Duke Nukem Forever is still vaporware. A couple last-gen looking screenshots do not mean a finished product is even close to forthcoming.

Meh, the tracks that were leaked recently sounded like they came right out of the late 90s, basically overproduced techno/rock ass. I'll be giving this one a pass.

I'm not going to get into the whole "Is this GN'R or not" debate 'cause I've had it before and it's just boring now.

I love most of the leaks. I'ev only heard Shackler's Revenge once but I thought it had potential. If the World - I've only heard a very rough demo so I'm looking forward to hearing the full version.

I've been waiting for this album for like 5/6 years now and I guess this is the closest we've ever come. I'm still skeptical however so I'm not jumping up and down in my seat just yet ;)

Absolutely right.

Axl recording without the other guys, and touring as GnR is like:

Robert Plant calling the Strange Sensation 'Led Zeppelin'
Paul McCartney calling himself 'The Beatles'
Dave Grohl calling the Foo Fighters 'Nirvana'
Brian May and Roger Taylor and Paul Rodgers performing as Queen (oh, wait! ;) )

This IS NOT Guns n Roses.
