Chick-fil-A digging themselves a hole

So far, as a result of Chick-fil-A President Dan Cathy's remarks against same sex marriage, Chicago, Boston & The Jim Henson Company all want to cut ties with the company and or block them from their cites.

Story about Chicago alderman who opposes the restaurant & has mayor's support.

This story has bits about Boston's mayor & The Jim Henson Company's stances against Chick-a-Fil.

I've heard good things about the food, but what the hell, any restaurant that's closed on Sunday doesn't want my business anyway :p
 
One is opening just ten minutes from here and I'm so mad. It's so good, but I hate some of the things that the founder stands for.

Yeah, I'm never going to eat there again.

Their chicken & biscuit breakfast sandwich was good but other than that the food is forgettable.

It's not just about what their founder thinks. If he had his own personal beliefs and didn't let it influence the culture at the company, that would be one thing, but Chick-Fil-A as an organization donates to and partners in "traditional marriage conferences" with groups that filed amicus briefs against the ruling striking down Prop 8 in California and lobbied against a ban on discrimination based on sexual orientation in Pennsylvania.

They actively donate to and partner with organizations that are politically active in fighting gay marriage and gay rights. Their charitable arm, the WinShape Foundation, bans gays at their retreats. One of their affiliates banned a video submitted to a contest about the meaning of love because it talked briefly about equality for same-sex couples.

I guess if a good chicken sandwich is all it takes to overlook bigotry, though...
 
The CEO's position on homosexuals -that I heard about a few years ago- prompted me to stop eating there in the first place. That and the food was "meh" at best.
 
It seems to me that Chik-Fil-A is being persecuted for the beliefs and practices of the CEO that don't seem to line up with the liberal minded conciousness of the day.

Belief in traditional marriage and familial structure is the right of any red blooded American. Just as it's the right for any red blooded American to believe otherwise.

The company does not exclude gays from their restaurants, nor do they advocate such in their hiring practices.

They just make some darn fine chicken.

We as potential customers can choose not to eat there, just as the company can choose to open up a store in Chicago, Boston or wherever they heck they want. (as long as the franchisee's choose fund the installation that is)

It is the CEO's, and the companys' and franchise owners, belief to close on Sundays to respect the Sabbath and "keep it holy". What's wrong with that?

I commend them for putting their money where their mouth is. (They are closing on what would be a huge sales day for them.) That's what used to be called "integrity".

I don't see anyone else doing that. I'm sure there are lots of folks who see their closing on Sunday's as a bad business model, but they've thrived and are a strong company.

Chik-Fil-A hasn't shot a single person, nor have they bombed anyone. The company doesn't have a single airplane brought down to it's credit.

They simply stand on the beliefs of their 2000+ year old religion. A religion that has endured much more than the fussing of Chicago, Boston, message board and muppet representatives.

I do predict that there will be a strong response to Chik-Fil-A's stand in the weeks to come. Both from those who scream for the company's heads and from those of us who are headed there for lunch today!

And for several dinners and lunches in the future.

Belief? Fine. Actively attempting to curtail civil rights? Not fine. Chick-Fil-A actively pursues the denial of same sex rights.

It's a simple fact that we're living in a modern society that should be open, free and respectful to everyone. These people are not when it comes to homosexuals.

This is no different than were it 50 years ago and a business spoke out against interracial marriage, or blacks sitting at the counter. Intolerance should not be tolerated (and such a thing is not an oxymoron.) If this CEO wants to express his rights and views about homosexuality and same-sex marriage he's certainly entitled to and has the right to.

But he should also be willing to deal with the aftermath of expressing those views. He has shown an intolerance and disrespect for a group of people, a group of people who should be treated with as much respect as anyone else.

His statements and comments shouldn't be tolerated anymore than they would be if it were against inter-racial marriages, mixed-culture marriages, or mixed-religion marriages.

Would people be as "freedom of speech/people are taking his comments too far!" if he spoke out against mixed-race marriages?

And it's the right of people to boycott their business and the right of cities to deny them permits for their discriminatory practices. That's not persecution.

The company excludes gays from their retreats. Companies can engage in discriminatory hiring practices without specifically spelling it out in corporate policy. Spelling it out in detail is unnecessary if their bigoted beliefs are a well-known part of the corporate culture which they enforce at the local level by the type of management personnel they hire. Also, they prefer hiring married workers, while actively fighting against gay marriage, so there's exclusion there as well.

Neither have 99% of the people and corporations in the country. That's a completely meaningless remark and a nice way to snake an unrelated terrorism reference into the discussion.
