In “The Deadly Years,” Chekov states, “oh yes, I’ll live, but I won’t enjoy it.”

Apparently the writers took that as a challenge from that moment forward.

I don't remember if I read it or heard him say it in person that he went to Bennett and said "Harve? Do I have to wear pink again?"

It would seem that Chekov's recovery was, in no small part, due to Terrell's death...after Terrell commits suicide, Chekov's eel somehow senses the death of its "brother" and thus instinctively forces its way out. And as soon as the eel leaves him, Chekov is able to recover relatively quickly.

(if the eel had remained in Chekov's head much longer, the "madness...and death" Khan spoke of, would have been much more likely.)

In any case, somebody must have seen to Chekov's needs, as he later reports for duty on the Enterprise ("Could you use another hand, Captain?").

This was actually explained by Walter Koenig himself. He said the original plan was to put a bandage on his head, but it was scrapped because it ended up looking ridiculous. We're left to assume he received medical attention.

He was planning much more than to just capture a Starfleet ship & get revenge on his nemesis. With a cache of Ceti Eels, he might have been able to subdue key persons that would allow him to gain control over much more.

In the novelization, a number of Reliant's engineers were being controlled by Ceti Eels, and forced into continuing normal duties, making it more believable that Khan's people could control the ship.

According to Vonda McIntyre there were (two of them) but Khan killed them.

Khan killed Zinaida (original to the novelization) but Terrell kills Jedda (John Vargas, who has hair, except in the script).

Because the 23rd century "bandage' was a 20th century woman's "falsie", repurposed. No one could stop sniggering.

I'm just glad he survived so he could go in search of nuclear wessels
