Chekov’s Hair Club For Starfleet Crewmembers

This was written two weeks after Star Trek's debut:

to: Joe D'Agosta ................... date: September 22, 1966
from: Gene Roddenberry....... subject: NEEDED CREW TYPE

Keeping our teen-age audience in mind, also keeping aware of current trends, let's watch for a young, irreverent, English-accent Beatle type to try on the show, possibly with an eye to him reoccurring. Like the smallish fellow* who looks to be a hit on "The Monkees." Personally I find this type spirited and refreshing, and I think our episodes could use that kind of lift. Let's discuss.

Gene Roddenberry
* Davy Jones

There’s no question that Davey Jones was an inspiration for Chekov. There’s a memo that flat out says so.
yes, exactly, the hope was to make him the teen heart throb of the cast. They wanted to capture the teenage girl demographic...this is pretty typical in most series, even ST:

Chekov, Wesley, Tom Paris, Bashir(?) (Or Jake Sisko) and so on...

Then you had the characters that the MILFs and Moms lusted after, like Kirk, Riker, Chakotay, Sisko, Archer...

(while the more 'academic' Moms and MILFs lusted after Spock and Picard)

pretty standard casting techniques
