Its kind of like porn movies taking titles from blockbusters to get some rentals on DVD..Moby Dick Becomes: "2010:Moby Dick", 20, 000 Leagues becomes: "30,000 Leagues Under the Sea". I briefly thought 2010:Moby Dick might be neat to watch...summary reads: US attack submarine hunts giant prehistoric whale. It had a great poster and was one of the top 5 viewed movies on Vudu...well I watched the trailer and it was horrible! The whale looked like tv CGI circa 1992.

Just one thing: Cheap scifi is not a trend, it is a hoary tradition.

Well Im aware of b movies of course, but mid-budget SF movies have all but disappeared. Now they don't even bother to come up with original titles!

Shitty sci fi movies and reruns of TV shows have been SyFy's staple since they started (as Sci Fi).

If this is a trend, it's one that has been in force since the 1950s. Cheap SF movies with lurid poster art and/or titles have been prevalent on screen since at least THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS in 1953. The only difference between now and the 1950s is that this trash premieres on television rather than in the form of double bills at drive-ins or other local theatres.

Yeah, you can pretty much thank Asylum Entertaining for that. They seem to make a lot of cheap Sci-Fi movies and knock-offs.

What I like is the way they so blatantly hop on any trend, I am Legend=I am Omega, Aliens vs Predator=Alien vs Hunters (because you can't copyright the word alien of course).

I think in many ways it's a case of the cheapness and ubiquity of CGI, that nowadays you can make a halfway decenet film with ok special effects for not that much money
