Charmed Reboot

What are your thoughts about the Charmed Reboot? Mine have changed over time.

I started thinking: "Why don´t they just continue the existing series with Chris and the kids?" But now I´m actually genuinly looking forward to NuCharmed. The trailer looks good and the "darker and grittier"-vibe they seem to be going for might actually work. I still can´t remember the girl´s names though ;-)

It´s a bit strange that two of them start with the same powers their original counterparts initially had but one begings with "telepathy by touch". They new whitelighter character (I think I´ve read his name is Harry...) comes across as some kind of mixture of Giles (from Buffy) and the later seasons rekless Leo.

One of the writers stated in an interview that in each episode the demon they battle represents an issue the girls face in their everyday lives. I´m not sure I´ll like that overly symbolic approach. I fear it´s going to be like: "Oh...this episode the girls got period issues...means this week we´re gonna battle the demon of tampons and sanitary pads. (Which when put like that sound like an episode of Sailor Moon ;-) )

I hadn't realized there was a trailer out for this. Having found it now, I'd have to say it's a hard pass for me. It comes across less as 'dark and gritty' to me and more as 'generic lifetime movie', and I can't say I'm even remotely impressed with any of the acting from anyone. Also, that one demon special effect they showed looks actually less convincing than the supercheap fx from the original Charmed over a decade ago. Charmed was a funny idea that worked for a while and wound up going on way too long, even back then. This may not be quite as over the top as the original was at the end, but it's still so close that I see no reason at all to bother with, and I would not be at all surprised to hear that it ultimately just goes down the same path of increasing ridiculousness that the original took.

For the record, though, I doubt the third sister is intended to only have touch telepathy. Maybe that touch makes it easier, but I'm sure she'll probably be reading minds at a distance fairly quickly.

The writers said their powers will grow, just like in the original. And about the demons SFX...it may not be the final effect..it may be in a development state in the trailer. Look at the "freezing time" effect for comparision..it looks WAY better then in the original where it was always pretty obvious that it was just paused video material composited into the scene.

Oh, heck, that's the formula of virtually every "problem-of-the-week" show in this serialized era, and has been for probably close to two decades now. Somehow, by extraordinary coincidence, every individual crisis the heroes in a given show encounter just happens to resonate perfectly with whatever they're dealing with in their personal arcs that week, or every client-of-the-week that they help is dealing with a personal issue paralleling their own. Fringe did this so regularly that the characters even remarked on the extraordinary synchronicity of it all in one episode.
