Charlie Brooker Black Mirror

It's like Twilight Zone, if it mostly focused on the subject matter of the social and cultural implications of near future technology.
The USS Maccalister episode is basically "It's a Good Life" but the nature of the villain's power is technological instead of supernatural. It's still about absolute power corrupting a person and driving them to torture those trapped with him. Black Mirror even gave him an ironic ending similar to other Twilight Zone episodes where the evil protagonist has their comeuppance. It was just missing the opening and closing narration.

Another theme I read into that episode was the recurring concept that when we develop the means to create sentient AI, there will be no laws governing treatment of them and they'll basically be helpless slaves to the whims of their creators.

It's also satire on escapism and Star Trek escapism in particular. We take a show whose major themes are applying principles of equality, freedom and self determination to life in all its forms, and our fantasies involve us forcing our will on the universe.

I'm always late to these things. I just finished this series on Netflix and it's depressing, interesting, always makes you think. Sorry if the post is a necro but geez it was a great show.

I loved the final episode too it had one or two items I spotted from previous episodes. I wonder how the museum guy got the DNA sniffer from the video game episode? I'm pretty sure that was one of the items on exhibit. That was a great episode too.

I'm still stewing on the USS McCallister episode and have to process that one. I have things I want to say about that one but not sure if what I say wouldn't already have been discussed in here. But yeah that one's themes really struck with me.
