Finnegan is a poignant example of the rigors of youth as during the transition to adulthood, clashing with the independant responsibilities and expectations unique to both stages of life. With this in consideration, Finnegan is indeed one of Trek's most complex characters with the most depth.

I know of no one who can match this level of depth and complexity. Harry Kim and Travis Mayweather come close, but don't quite measure up. I suppose Chief Engineer Argyle from TNG equally as deep and complex, but for completely different reasons.

You forgot Wesley Crusher and Nog.

No, they were camera whores, always taking up screentime. Wesley and countless episodes devoted to him, including three after he left the show. While Nog had that entire episode about him losing his leg, which is clearly a rip-off oof the clearly superior BSG storyline about Gaeta losing his leg. Mind you, Gaeta didn't quite have the depth and complexity of his boyfriend, Lt. Hoshi.

Dude, adolescent angst is overrated. Whether or not some dipshit made fun of Kirk at school doesn't make much difference in characterization. I mean, if we're worried about formative experiences for Kirk and ansty teenage BS, I think we shall have it in spades with dead father, drunk uncle, kobayashi maru cheating. I'm worried about too much "depth and complexity" honestly.

Besides, real depth and complexity isn't determined by some kind of childhood trauma. That's only one factor (of which Kirk has plenty), but I'm sure we'll have a rich tapestry of backstory that will introduce us to Kirk.

I'm kinda curious now tho, who are the other angsty teens on ST? There's Jake... that whole episode where all of TNG became children... I forget.

I think what you're getting at is a "catalyst", not a character. Finnegan was not complex, neither was he a particularly interesting character.
