The Myriad Universes novel series (basically alternate what if tales) did such a thing. The same story also had Kirk and the Commander becoming friends with the Commander saying something along the lines of "I am grateful in this reality I can call you friend."
How would he be aware that there are other realities? For all we know, we already are in an alternate reality and don't even know it.
It was a figure of speech playing off the line from Balance of Terror. Don't think too much about, just some meta fun, not empirical canonical fact.

The meetings that I'd really like to see are the different characters and their respective mirror universe alter egos. We only saw Kira and hers, as far as I know and also mirror archer and an imaginary version of regular Archer. But it would be interesting to see each character argue with his/her vis-a-vis, about their behavior and motivation.
I read that series, but don't remember that story. Which one was it?
