Characters in the book that really have no S/L

Besides, we essentially get enough books a year catering to both preferences. The TOS novels are stand-alones with a beginning middle and end all in one novel and the 24th century series have the developing story arcs. Sure, I wouldn't mind maybe one stand-alone novel in the 24th century a year, perhaps set during the run of one of the TV series. After all, the 23rd century gets both stand-alones (TOS) and developing arcs (Vanguard and The Seekers) so a stand-alone 24th century novel could be a good idea. But otherwise, I'm satisfied with the annual assortment as it's presented.

I've been hearing the same "I wish they'd return to standalones and stop the events" complaint pretty much since the events started in 1996. Thing is, the events are what sell. Time and time again. "Cold Equations" and "The Fall" put Trek novels back on the Times best-seller list for the first time in ages. You really think that a company in a capitalist society whose function is to, y'know, make money is going to abandon a strategy for profit that is proven to work?

I am fairly certain that the denizens of this forum would buy a book that was a mashup of Duck Dynasty and Star Trek. We tend to buy books. :) I understand the money end of the business, and I agree that "events" can be amazing and universe changing. I was just explaining my preference for smaller stories, simply because they allow for IMO better and deeper character development. It is difficult to care about Ensign fillingaspacebecausethestarissomewhereelse UNLESS we get some time to learn about hens background and motivations. Then the author can kill them off and we actually feel something.

This is the part where I shamelessly point out that I have a standalone TOS book coming out just next month . . . :)
