Characters in relationships

Hey, guys, I'm hoping you all can help me out with something. I'm trying to recall/make a list of all the characters that are, as of their current episode/film/novel, in relationships (and when they started).

So far, I've got:
  • Married:
    • Cmdr. Tuvok & T'Pel (m. 2304 - "Caretaker")
    • Adm. John Harriman & Capt. Amina Sasine-Harriman (m. 2311 - Serpents Among the Ruins/One Constant Star)
    • Amb. Spock & Capt. Saavik (m. 2327 - Vulcan's Heart/Soul trilogy, possibly out of sync with current novel-verse continuity)
    • SCPO Miles O'Brien & Keiko O'Brien (m. October 24, 2367 - "Data's Day")
    • Grand Nagus Rom & Leeta (m. 2373 - "Call to Arms")
    • Capt. Ben Sisko & Kasidy Yates-Sisko (m. 2375 - "’Til Death Do Us Part")
    • Lt. Cmdr. Tom Paris & Lt. Cmdr. B'Elanna Torres (m. 2377 - "Drive")
    • R-Adm. Will Riker & Cmdr. Deanna Troi (m. 2379 - Nemesis)
    • Capt. Jean-Luc Picard & Cmdr. (Dr.) Beverly Crusher (m. 2380 - Greater Than the Sum)
  • Widowed:
    • Sarek, widower of Amanda Grayson (m. 2227, d. 2293/2311 (I've seen both dates) - TOS)
    • Lt. Worf, widower of K'Ehyler (m. 2365, d. 2367 - TNG)
    • Perrin Landover, widow of Amb. Sarek (Ret.) (m. 2328, d. 2368 - TNG)
    • Lt. Cmdr. Worf, widower of Lt. Cmdr. Jadzia Dax (m. 2374, d. 2374 - DS9)
    • Martok, widower of Sirella (m. 2340s, d. 2376 - "You Are Cordially Invited", The Left Hand of Destiny)
    • Julia Paris, widow of Adm. Owen Paris (m. 2330s/40s, d. February 2381 - VOY/Destiny)
  • Divorced:
  • Engaged:
    • Lt. Cmdr. Takaishi Kimura (Ret.) & Lt. Cmdr. Hoshi Sato (engaged: 2165 - ENT: ROTF)
  • Dating:
    • S31 Agt. Charles "Trip" Tucker & Capt. T'Pol (2150s/2160s - ENT; possibly married by 2186 - To Brave the Storm)
    • Adm. Jonathan Archer & Danica Erickson (2164 - ENT: ROTF)
    • Lt. Sam Kirk & Lt. Valeria Williams (2164 - ENT: ROTF)
    • Gen. Klag & Lt. B'Oraq (2376 - A Burning House) (possibly married by 2381)
    • Capt. Chakotay & V-Adm. Kathryn Janeway (2379-2380, 2381 - The Eternal Tide)
    • Lt. Harry Kim & Lt. Nancy Conlon (2381/82 - Protectors)
Also, depending on the book, it seems like Cmdr. Geordi La Forge is in a (non-exclusive) relationship with both Leah Brahms and Dr. Tamala Harstad at the same time.

I know there's plenty I'm missing, but there's a start. Thanks for the help.

If I remember correctly I think LaForge is back with Harstad full time. I'm not positive but I think he and Brahm's left things as friends after The Light Fantastic and he recommitted to Harstad.

I am curious about Spock and Saavik. Largely that was something noted in the Vulcan's Soul novels. At least some of that trilogy has been included with the current relaunch novelverse. I have seen references to the Watraii in later books. I think when it comes to Vulcan marriages they frequently spend long periods apart from each other. So it's not out of the question they could be married and just apart.

Aren't Chakotay and Janeway married now? I can't remember now if they tied the knot or not (no pun intended).

Never mind about Janeway and Chakotay. I just checked Memory Beta and they are not married.

One I remembered though was Jake Sisko and Azeni Korena. According to Memory Beta they were married in 2376 and have a daughter Jennifer (that was noted in the Enterprise novel: The Good that Men Do)

Divorced and also dead is Captain Rachel Garrett. I recently read Well of Souls, which is set in the year 2336. She is divorced from Ven Keldarren, a Betazoid, and has a son named Jase. Memory Beta says they divorced in 2333.

Divorced: Quark, son of Keldar. Divorced from Grilka, widow of Kozak. (Married and divorced in 2371) DS9

Kirk is divorced from Lori Ciana (well, more accurately, they didn't renew a short term marriage contract).

Short Term marriage contract sounds like something the Ferengi have invented. I guess no Ferengi marries without contract, that would be a financial loss. :D

It's an idea that was common in prose science fiction in the '70s. Vonda McIntyre mentioned a similar custom in The Entropy Effect, in the context of a polygamous group marriage. It was the decade after the Sexual Revolution, the age of the swinger, so SF writers speculated a lot about ways future marital customs might evolve away from the old convention of monogamous marriage for life.

Considering that there are so many break-ups even in long-term marriages short-term solutions are not bad. Many of my friends don't marry at all and prefer that what the Germans call "Wilde Ehe" and my dictionary translates as Common Law Marriage.

^Yeah, I think that was basically the idea. With divorce becoming common, some people proposed that it would be more logical if marriage were a contract that came up for renewal every few years, so if the couple were happy, they could stay together, but if it didn't work out, they could just let it expire and move on, which would be a lot simpler than divorce proceedings. And presumably the contract would have built-in parameters for the terms of the expiration, who got what property afterward, etc. It's always sounded like a reasonable approach to me.

^ I don't recall if you're married Christopher, but if you are hopefully your spouse doesn't read your comment. "So you want an expiration date huh":D

It's not an expiration date, it's an option to renew. It's like Pocket's Star Trek license -- every few years, it comes up for renewal, and usually (the past couple of years aside) that's little more than a formality.

Indeed, I think that if a marriage comes up for review every so often, that's more of an incentive for the partners to put effort into making it work. If they just assume it's a lifelong deal, they can come to take it for granted and fail to do the work it takes to keep a relationship healthy.

I know. I've just seen many sitcoms where next thing you know there's a misunderstanding. Then the more they explain it the bigger the hole gets. Then the next thing you know he's buying her flowers and taking her out for a romantic dinner :rommie:

Thank you for your responses, everybody. Almost right after I posted this, I recalled Jake & Korena, and Rom & Leeta. Since then, I've also recalled:
  • Married:
    • Skon and T'Rama (I believe they were married in the 2150s)
    • Adm. Shran and his shelthreth party, including Special Aenar Representative to the UFP Thirijhamel "Jhamel" zh'Dhaven
    • Capt. Atish Khatami has a never-seen but often-referred to (if I remember correctly) husband and child on Deneva
    • Capt. David Gold and Rabbi Rachel Gilman
    • Lt. Shar ch'Thane (Ret.) and his shelthreth party
  • Widowed:
    • The late Lt. Cmdr. Ian Troi and his widow Amb. Lwaxana (although arguably she should've been one of the first couples I recalled!)
    • The late Lt. Andrew Powell and his widow Lt. (Ns./Dr.) Alyssa Ogawa
    • Tuvok's son Eilith and his wife Ione Kitain were both killed in the Borg attack on Deneva
  • Divorced:
    • Adm. (Dr.) Leonard McCoy (Ret.) and his ex-wife Jocelyn
    • Former Cdre. Diego Reyes and his ex-wife Jeanne Vinueza (a telepath and the Governor of the colony Reyes ordered General Order 24ed in Vanguard #3)
  • Ex-fiancées:
    • Mark Johnson and Capt. Kathryn Janeway
  • Dating:
    • Capt. Malcolm Reed and Capt. Caroline Paris
    • Former Cdre. Diego Ryes and Capt. Rana Desai (I recall that she showed up on his doorstep in 2270, a couple years after the Destruction of Vanguard, but I don't know if they married or not)
    • CPO Vance Hawkins and Crew. Carol Abromowitz
    • Lt. Cmdr. Taurik and Lt. T'Ryssa Chen
    • Lt. Gary Weinreb & Lt. Dina Elfiki (although I can't remember if helmsman Weinreb is a full Lieutenant or a Lieutenant, junior grade)
  • Dating/deceased:
    • Lt. Cmdr. Kieran Duffy was KIA while dating (awaiting her answer to his marriage proposal) Cmdr. Sonya Gomez
    • Lt. Cmdr. Jaza Najem was KIA while dating Cmdr. Christine Vale
    • Lt. Jasminder Choudhury was KIA while dating Cmdr. Worf
  • Former couples:
    • Capt. James Kirk and Carol Marcus
    • Kyle Riker and Cmdr. (Dr.) Katherine Pulaski
    • Capt. Jean-Luc Picard and Lt. Cmdr. Nella Daren
    • Lt. Worf and Cmdr. Deanna Troi
    • Odo and Col. Kira Nerys
    • Cmdr. (Dr.) Julian Bashir and Lt. Ezri Dax
    • Crew. Bart Faulwell and Lt. Cmdr. Anthony Mack
    • Lt. Rennan Konya and Lt. T'Ryssa Chen
In Star Trek: Seekers, Ens. Taryl gave Crew. Torvin his first kiss (although I can't recall off the top of my head if that was before or after his promotion to PO3).

Over in the Mirror Universe, Emp. Spock was married to Marlena Moreau until their executions in 2295.

In the various Myriad Universes:
  • Married:
    • Cmdr. Worf and Lt. Cmdr. Deanna Troi ("Parallels")
    • Capt. Will Riker and Cmdr. Deanna Troi ("A Gutted World")
    • Rep. Chakotay and Capt. Kathryn Janeway ("Places of Exile")
  • Widowed:
    • T'Pol and her widow Trip Tucker ("A Less Perfect Union")
    • Carol Kirk and her widow Cmdr. James Kirk ("A Less Perfect Union")
    • T'Pel and her widow Lt. Tuvok ("A Gutted World")
    • Rabbi Rachel Gilman and her widow Capt. David Gold ("A Gutted World")
    • Mark Johnson and his widow Capt. Kathryn Janeway ("A Gutted World")
  • Dating:
    • Lt. Wesley Crusher and Lal ("Brave New World") (actually, did they really start a relationship or was it just flirting?)
Again, thank you for all your help and I'll add more as I remember/find them.

They were a fairly steady couple for a couple books, but as of Headlong Flight she's gotten back together with Konya. I haven't read Hearts and Minds yet, so I'm not sure what their relationship status is there.

Yeah, Chen and Konya are currently and item if I remember correctly. They worked out some differences. She and Taurik are friends, good friends even. But I think it's kind of that friendship now where there will be no romance between them. And I think both are happy with that (or in Taurik's case, content that is the logical course for the future ;) ).

That sounds good to me. I never really got Chen and Taurik as a couple. They don't have a lot in common. Maybe it helped T'Ryssa work through some of her issues with Vulcans and be more at peace with that side of her heritage, but beyond that I don't really see it as a lasting relationship.

On the other hand, when I wrote Chen and Konya as a couple, they were both pretty casual about it.

Maybe it helped T'Ryssa work through some of her issues with Vulcans and be more at peace with that side of her heritage,

I think that was it in a nutshell. She largely rejected her Vulcan side, but I think it left an emptiness in her and in a way Taurik helped her make peace with that side of herself. Part of it too is she probably thought of it as a challenge. Could she romance a full blooded Vulcan, and maybe a little curiosity too. Once that was satisfied it seemed she lost her interest in a romance, but found a friendship instead. And Taurik being a Vulcan was probably one of those people you really could 'just be friends' with after a relationship and not have any issues.

It'll be interesting to see where her and Konya go from here. In the last book if I remember I think they both were interested in maybe pursuing something a bit more serious. In some ways I see parellels with zh'Thinn and Dr. Barai from the Prometheus books (actually another potential relationship for the list if Prometheus is being included), something casual with the door open to something more serious. And Chen's exploring a previously ignored part of herself might be similar to Soleta in the NF series.
