Character Review Thread: Coulson, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.

[Admiral Buzzkill]

Coulson is supposed to be an "annoying little twat" but not to an offensive degree. I thought his portrayal was consistent with his two previous appearances.

Well, I sure wouldn't suggest that the actor didn't do a fine job or that the character doesn't work in the film. I didn't assume that he was supposed to be likeable - lots of characters aren't - and am mildly surprised that he's popular.

He is the Wedge Antilles of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Not likable to the MU characters, likable to us

He's the "everyman" who gets to mingle with the super crowd. I think of him as middlemanagement who wants to get ahead in his own type of corporate world.

He's the Xander of the Marvel movies, except not whiny or self-absorbed.

Actually I think Coulson is higher in Shield than one thinks. Afterall Fury has him handling all the superhero stuff.

I think of him as the amalgam character for Gabe Jones and "Dum Dum" Dugan.

Of course, that would make him an interracial character...

Which means he's even more WINNING!

But season 7 Xander is Nick Fury, once Caleb pops that eye out.

It's going to be interesting to see how "Avengers" uses Maria Hill. If she's presented as a regular Shield agent or Deputy Director like she was introduced in the comics IIRC.

I like the character. He's got to have something going for him since Nick Fury hand picks him to head up new superhero stuff. I just love the dull suprise he shows to the weird.
