[The Wormhole]

Although I've always picked on Michael Giacchino for his off-the-wall titles, I actually find myself hoping he had titled these tracks. Those are some bland and uninteresting titles. Or hell, why not get whoever thinks up the episode titles to title these tracks?

anybody listening to this? it's on iTunes and spotify now. and it's... well... kinda boring.

star trek TV music is notoriously bland, but this is surprisingly sleepy - the exception being "persistence" which is from the burnham/tilly hallway jog sequence, sort of nintendo meets discovery's main theme, very cute. but also brief. i think the highlight of the album is the final track, the "main title (extended)" - basically the opening credits with a little more kick and without the obnoxious rendition of the TOS fanfare that ends the aired version.

all in all, i love jeff russo's bizarre work in legion and his quite beautiful work in fargo, but this is a letdown. in an era where shows like the crown and stranger things use music to punctate their individual styles, russo's work on discovery is disappointingly anonymous. discovery deserves a better musical voice.

I was hoping that removing from the context of the show (where it's mixed quite low) would improve the music but nope, it's just as dull. In a way, it's just as wallpapery as late TNG, just in a more contemporary Hans Zimmerish idiom. But that's the sound producers seem to want these days so I don't blame Russo.

While it's no Bear McCreary 78-minutes-of-wall-to-wall-awesome spectacular, I think comparing it to the doldrums of the 90s TV Trek scores is going a bit too far. It's got style, and I can tell one track from the next, which hasn't always been the case even on the curated soundtracks for TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. I'll agree that the extended main title is better for losing the TOS fanfare, which I regard as the 1701's theme, specifically. On the other hand, I really like the use of it in "Stella," which I rationalize as being foreshadowing of where Harry Mudd is going to pop up next.

funny you mention battlestar, the michael burnham theme (i think) is almost note-for-note boomer’s theme from BSG.

Honestly I didn't find McCreary's BSG music that memorable either. I just remember lots of taiko drums being beat. Now the Stu Phillips BSG music from 1979? Excellent stuff.

and here i consider mccreary's work on BSG the best musical contribution to a television series, bar none. its complexity rivals williams' work in star wars and shore's work in the lord of the rings and hobbit films.

As expected, they completely left off all the selections that I actually wanted and instead filled the album with mood music.

I am a fan of McCreary's work for the short lived Human Target series. Though I'd say the music of The Orville would be my favorite musical score to a television show. Even if it is mostly pastiche. It just fills me with good vibes.

love the music from orville, hope they release it soon.

i do listen to la la land's giant releases of music from the various TV series... dennis mccarthy and jay chattaway's mid-to-late-series work on TNG gets me all nostalgic, despite the generally generic, completely safe mode they're composed and recorded in.

and i have continued to listen to the discovery soundtrack this week, basically so i don't get tired of the last jedi soundtrack, but there are a few more notable compositions there: "i can't dance", "undetermined", and "watch the stars fall" are all nice riffs on the main theme are pretty, if still weak.
