While it's no Bear McCreary 78-minutes-of-wall-to-wall-awesome spectacular, I think comparing it to the doldrums of the 90s TV Trek scores is going a bit too far. It's got style, and I can tell one track from the next, which hasn't always been the case even on the curated soundtracks for TNG, DS9, VOY, and ENT. I'll agree that the extended main title is better for losing the TOS fanfare, which I regard as the 1701's theme, specifically. On the other hand, I really like the use of it in "Stella," which I rationalize as being foreshadowing of where Harry Mudd is going to pop up next.
