Chabon honors women Trek writers and fans

IIRC, Snodgrass had to fight hard for the script. Apparently Gene agreed with Maddox: if Starfleet wanted to disassemble Data, he should go along with it.

That's not entirely accurate. Roddenberry objected to the script because he felt lawyers would be obsolete in his enlightened 24th Century.

"As to the issue of law in Gene's vision. He nearly killed 'The Measure of a Man' because according to Gene there were no lawyers in the 24th century because if people had criminal intentions they 'had their minds made right'. I found that chilling. I also pointed out that you have contracts that have to be negotiated and conflicts of law between different legal systems, and divorces, etc. etc. There was no way there would be no lawyers in the future."

I didn't know we have Melinda to thank for extended "Measure of a Man" because she saved an old videotape!

I'm trying to think how the Federation can forcibly recondition criminals to have "their minds made right". Ceti eels? Vulcan mindmeld brainwashing? Lock them in a holodeck with recreations of criminal temptations and don't let them out until they pass the test?

Snodgrass had some good stories. I'm not sure why she clashed with Piller.

The entire returning staff (Snodgrass, Beimler, Manning) clashed with Piller and eventually left. This gave Piller a chance to assemble his own staff (Behr, Moore, Taylor, Braga, etc). But after the series ended Piller picked Snodgrass' episode (Mearure of a Man) as his favorite TNG episode even though it was made before he became the showrunner.

Reminds me of the Trek writer fights we had with Discovery not too long ago, with Harberts and Berg accused of stuff and Kurtzman coming in and taking over.

Wasn't Rick Berman and Maurice Hurley running things in season 2? Wouldn't Snodgrass be dealing more with them more than Roddenberry when it comes to the script?

In season two and three, Roddenberry was still inserting his editorial input. There were certainly stories he turned down or demanded be rewritten.
