CGI Enterprise, put the Blue Warp Lights in one episode

That might work, too. And be less controversial. It's not too long before the next and final batch of 40 Remastered episodes will be on DVD, so maybe the word will get to CBS/Paramount and the Okudas to come up with bonus disc features like that.

Didn't the pre-refit Constitution class starships have the glowing nacelles in Star Trek Legacy?

The game? Can't tell you. Never played the TOS-era settings and levels. Just the Archer-era 22nd century stuff and one game with Picard-era ships.

In Legacy, the TOS era ships indeed have glowing nacelle inside faces that looked just slightly blue this side of white, and glowing white aft nacelle spheres too... I noticed it rather quickly and ultimately didn't really mind either 'modification.' I always assumed that the aft caps were supposed to glow and was surprised to learn that the 'glow' was only the result of reflective white paint on the old model.

:rommie:

Plus, it's a video game. And non-canonical. So even if you HAD detested the modification it wouldn't have affected the "official" TREK universe in any meaningful way.

All this aside, I think the one thing that remastered TOS has brought home for me is how little TOS relied on special effects in the first place. Looking at some of these eps, and checking out a few of the "VFX reels" fans post to YouTube, I'm struck by how little is actually shown. Just a minute or two per episode. That's it.

I would imagine that remastering TNG would require a much larger undertaking, because it tended to rely on more FX and the stories (from where I sit) seemed less driven by either writer's creativity or by being designed to rely on the viewer's imagination. (There are exceptions, of course, such as "The Measure of a Man", and "Ensigns of Command".)

What is actually very surprising (and yes I was a big enough nerd to do this during Enterprise's 3rd season), was to actually count the amount of time fx where on screen on various episodes of Trek.

I had assumed that each new series relied more and more on special effects (and to tell story they did), but they actually didn't in screen time.

At least on average. What did occur was that one each series the cuts were quicker. You would get more special effect scenes, but they would be of shorter duration.

No long slow flybys, no long slow orbital shots. Especially the opening and closing shots on TOS.

You can't really go by the youtube clips since those are of edited episodes. You need to go off the originals, to get the full amount of screen time effects take up (though in fairness the episodes were also longer).

THough of course, the more modern Trek was able to tell more of the story by having specific effects shots that for many episodes and scenes, as opposed to a set number of recycled shots used over and over again.

All undoubtedly true. Part of what you're talking about is not a STAR TREK phenomenon. It's the changes in production of all television. MTV really revolutionized TV and movies with constant cuts. You don't see alot of video (or even cinematography) outside of C-SPAN, cable news and cable shopping channels that use shots lasting longer than 3 seconds.

ENT's Defiant did have the TMP Aztec pattern, glowing impulse engines, the phaser effects were updated, and NO headlight was shining on the hull.

EGAD! :scream: :brickwall:

Star Trek Legacy's TOS Constitution with the inner dish rings glowing, the game's warp effect, and shield flares in the last TOS-R episode would be great!

The Enterprise redone in CGI. The ship looks sharp redone but it is still a little plain and 1960ish which is the intention. But it still looks DAMN Good !
Who think that the inboard warp field grills on the ships Warp Engines should be illuminated with the Blue Lights for just one episode. It could be redone in a Remastered Season 3 Episode. Since the Illuminated Warp lights began in Star Trek-The Motion Picture it would make sense that Scotty took the "covers Off once in a while ..." and let the engines light up for just one show to see how the ship performed ! It would look sharp !
well lets see some fan art!

^ I wouldn't mind them doing something different with the nacelles or using a different TNG or TMPish warp effect in TOS-R when the Andromeda beings take over the Enterprise and modify the Warp engines to operate at ludicrous speed!

/My God Jim! We've gone to plaid!

True. When the Enterprise leaves our galaxy and begins zooming towards the Andromeda at what amounts to "ludicrous speed" maybe they could have the nacelles glow to depict how taxed and overworked they are pushing the ship that fast.

Well, not to get on the wrong side of this argument ;) but here was my take on a Franz Joseph Federation class with glowing flux chillers. I got rid of it in favor of a more classic look, but it's not entirely without it's appeal.

Mind you, I think this is a bit like saying that late WWII P-51s should have jet exhaust, just because they were really CLOSE to going to jet power. The TMP engines weren't really so much an evolution as they were a leap forward. Another reason why I hate ret-conning TMP and especially TNG tech back to TOS.

Since I regard remastered as something interesting to look at that in most cases isn't as good as the original (and is anyone going to change their mind one way or the other at this point - no) I really wouldn't care if they did it. Heck do three versions of the same shot. No diff to me. I'll say "cool" and still look at the origial for shot refs.

Here's my try using the 1701 model by Nova Class and a screencap from trekmovie.com (WNMHGB).

Actually, this is one of my Trek pet peeves. Why does every futuristic technology have to glow? I don't see the need for it.

Clarke's Law 3a: "Any sufficiently advanced technology will be indistinguishable from glo-sticks."

It also reminds me of a conversation in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Giles: It appears to be of supernatural origin.
Buffy: How can you tell?
Giles: Well, it's so shiny....

Apparently that image doesn't work? While I'm glad they didn't add the glow for the remastered trek I also wouldn't mind it for one ep such as "By Any Other Name".

Since the other doesn't work here is a thumbnail to the larger pic.

Nice.

But I'm glad the Remastered team have left the nacelles alone.
