CGI artists put themselves into TOS

Sounds like some people are jealous that they didn't get to be CGI'd into the show. That's okay, I suppose. I'm jealous, too!

And understad that, ever since TNG's Matte Paintings we have had people shot on to the image. These are almost always people working in the effects house that they can grab and shot very long shots of (and they are long shots).

For example in Devil's Due you notice you can see very tiny people walking and running on the matte image of the city. Those are real people and usually part of the effects group.

In 11001001, where we see crew walking off teh Enterprise into the Starbase, same thing.

This is an exceedingly common practise in Static matte shots to give the image life and motion.

And its far, far easier to grap a crafts person, then to pay an extra or an actor to do it.

And no these guys get to pay for it.

Its part of their pay for the work they are already providing.

OMG!!

Is it the Apocalypse?? IS IT THE APOCALYPSE!!!!?

And how come I'm not invited!!

Functionally it is not a big deal, but it may represent, perhaps, an attitude to do "cool stuff" because it can be done.

Which attitude existed long before Star Trek was even an idea. Or films, for that matter.

Cool for them but is it really the ethical things to do?

Tell me aobut it!

Every time a Trek:"Remastered" CG artist puts a tiny pixelated image of himself in a matte-painting in the TOS we help the terrorists win.

Every time you see a 10-pixel high picture of a CGI artist agaisnt a matte paitning, God kills a kitten.

My ownly quibble with that is that there's no way they could've been matted in like that in the 60's without a backdrop to make sure they fit in.

I know that's irrelevant in 2006, but it's kind of sad.

If they weren't moving, they could be part of the painting, or with careful photography, also matted in, with the elements of their building (presumably filmed outside a real one) painted to match their "actual" location (as much as possible.)

Ever seen a 1956 sci-fi flick called 'FORBIDDEN PLANET'?

Worse is that they're BRAGGING about doing it.

And if they'd kept it a secret, people would be asking, "Does anyone know who plays the tiny new people in the matt painting? We demand to know who these unsung heroes are. We want to invite them to our convention."

They should have kept it quiet, short of not doing it.
I admit it would have made a stir at a convention, if it was announced there.

That's not what I meant at all.

Heck, if I was CGI-ing TOS, I'd put me in it - and I'd tell everyone about it.

The figures we are talking about are miniscule. Many fans hated the computer-animated little Spock that got added to TMP: DE, because they claimed they could "tell" he wasn't a real person - and yet now they put tiny "real people" into a scene and they're getting blasted again?

They were supposed to agree with each other that noone should ever spill their guts about their teeny tiny cameos? They were supposed to hire non entities instead?

Yeah, notice they used a real floor to match up the perspectives during the underground Krell scenes.
