today i watched the Invasion. i quite enjoyed it, but boy was it begging for more money for FX. the UNIT C-130 is never seen properly and isn't seen airborne despite remarks about it taking off and landing twice, there's overuse of stock footage of SAMs being readied and fired and the so-called Soviet moon rocket is actually a V2 rocket!
but, i did enjoy it. the animation for the 2 missing episodes wasn't bad, but the 'toon versions of Jamie and Vaughn looked nothing like the actors...

I've been interested in checking that one out myself. Is the animation the same kind of style they used for that recent Infinity Quest cartoon?
I just watched The Sontaran Experiment last night. Yeah I know it's not one of the better ones, but it directly followed up Ark in Space and I was curious how the storyline would be followed up (turns out, not very well).
And my god, Elizabeth Sladen does way too much overacting on this show! All her quivering and trembling at every little thing she sees. She must be the most fearful, emotionally traumatized companion I've ever seen!
I know she's beloved by the fans, but I'm REALLY starting to get sick of her. lol

watched The War Games. my enjoyment of it was somewhat spoiled by poor sound quality on the *ahem* copy of it i had.

If you ask me, any story featuring Harry Sullivan was automatically slightly better than any story not featuring Harry.
i had trouble taking him seriously. he sounds like he escaped from the '50s, not being from the '70s. or is it the '80s?
I just finished up Robots of Death. Not all that great, and Tom Baker looks completely bored in it for some reason.
It was cool getting a look at that wooden Console Room though. There's a lot I really like about the design, but the room just seems a little too dark and the console itself is way too small.

I love Robots of Death! I think it's easily one of the very best Tom did. An Agatha Christie-inspired whodunnit (no pun intended), with some fantastic characters, and brilliantly designed robots.
Leela shines as well. I think she tends to get overlooked by fans who seem to prefer Sarah and Romana, but for me Leela was Tom's best companion.
I agree that the wooden console room didn't really work. No great loss.

But, I kind of get what he's talking about. Especially if you're used to the slightly more zany and in-love 4th Doctor from the Douglas Adams season(s), the earlier Baker is actually quite serious. I would say the love of Robots of Death comes not from Baker's portrayal of the Doctor in that episode, but of the plot and episode itself. It's a "classic" because of the story, not for anything especially epic that Baker did...
To be honest I didn't find the plot all that interesting either. You got a bunch of whiny, clueless crewmembers who strangely can't conceive of a robot ever killing anyone (what, a robot's never malfunctioned or been reprogrammed before??), you got this "good" robot who comes out of nowhere to help the Doctor, and then the villain who wants to BE a robot for some reason (I'm still a little fuzzy on what that was all about, lol).
It just seemed like a generic "killer robots on the loose" story to me.
I admit the robots and the production design were pretty cool, but that's about it.
Outside of the robot that took the guy's arm off there no talk of any robot killing a human as far the storyline is concerned. Capel's only companions were robots, it was mention somewhere that, that's the reason for the makeup in the first place, it was a social problem.
And I was surprised to learn that David Braillie who played Dask/Capel was in the Pirates Of The Carribbean movies as the guy with the parrot.
For me one of the elements that makes Robots such a classic is the wonderful world it creates. There's so many offhand comments that really contribute little to the story, but serve to make the setting feel very real.
Now if only they lost the hats...seriously I think the hats is about the only part of the story I don't like...well that and the villain of the piece being way too obvious!
