CC's Classic Who Run

my sister has lent me a bunch of her Who DVDs of classic stories (some legit, some not). I started off yesterday with 'Spearhead from Space', which I enjoyed. I do kinda wonder where Captain Munroe went, maybe he got a promotion and reassigned... 7/10

Today was 'Inferno'. I love the way the evil universe Brigadier and Stahlman lacked the facial hair they have normally, opposed to Trek's adding facial hair to evil cuonterparts... 8/10

I have previously seen Spearhead, when BBC2 ran a load of old Who stories in the early 90s, but i barely remember it. I quite liked Liz Shaw.

Next up is "The Three Doctors"...

also on the list "Tomb of the Cybermen", "The Invasion" "War Games", "Genesis of the Daleks", "City of Death", "Destiny of the Daleks", "The Sontarran Experiment", "Ghost Light", "Battlefield" and "Rememberance of the Daleks". "Survival" is on on of the discs, which I might watch as well... I had intended to watch them in order, but Sis wanted "Inferno" and Spearhead back before she heads back after xmas...

Yeah with the long wait until the new season, I've started checking out more of the classic eps too (I mostly just remember the lame Colin Baker and McCoy eps on PBS when I was a kid, and wanted to finally see some of the GOOD ones. lol)

"Genesis" I thought was a bit overrated though. It starts out good, and the final couple episodes are great... but everything in the middle definitely feels padded and drawn out. Six episodes was definitely too many for that story.

I've got several other 4th Doctor episodes to see too. I wanted to check out more of the 5th's stuff, but from everything I've read the only decent episode is his last one.

There was only one "lame" episode of Colin Baker's era. "Timelash" ... everything else was perfect.

Peter has a LOT of good stories. While his final episode if considered his best, I still enjoy Castrovalva, Arc of Infinity, Earthshock, The Visitation, Snakedance, Mawdryn Undead, etc., etc. Skip Time Flight and Terminus, and you should be okay...

I think Omega is one of my favourite villains. Not only is he as mad as a box of frogs, but I love the idea that his incredible will-power created that concrete and plywood domain.

And a note of thanks to the Time Lord Chancellor - the way he says "equal and opposite to our own" whilst sitting in his garish perspex control room is unforgettable. I could watch that on a loop.

The DVD has one of the funniest extras. Watch the BSB 30 Who stuff, and look out for JNT interviewing Bob Baker and Dave Martin. There's something about his line "Jewellery? Great." that always has me in stitches. The general awfulness of the rest of that "celebration" is also worth watching, particularly the presenter trying to pretend she was actually conversing with Jon Pertwee.

watched 'Tomb' today. not bad. not brilliant, but quite good if you excuse the hugely sexist attitudes of the 'space men' of the future and the slightly laughable FX work. i'm giving it... 7/10

Tomb is very much a show of its time so I imagine it's set in some weird part of the future when humanity regresses in to an old conservative menality. Which is perfetly possible as the swings between left and right in the US over recent decades shows.

I just got done with Ark in Space and City of Death for the first time (as far as I can remember anyway), and thought they were both fantastic.

And I have to admit, that while I always just accepted that Tom Baker was the best Doctor, now I'm finally beginning to understand why. He is just a lot of fun to watch (and that voice of his is fantastic).

Interesting timing on that Mirror/Mirror beard point: the original Star Trek first ran in the UK in June 1969 (just as it was ending in the States), when it took over Doctor Who's slot one week after the last Patrick Troughton episode.
So Trek would have had about 24-26 weeks on air before the first Jon Pertwee season came on and reclaimed that slot. I don't know if it carried on in a new slot, or went off the air til summer 1970... (but when James Blish was novelizing Trek while living in Britain, he hadn't actually seen any episodes till a good half way through the 12 volumes he wrote up).
In theory though that means that when Inferno went out, and certainly when it was written and made in late 1969, Mirror/Mirror probably hadn't been seen in the UK (but... the BBC didn't run Trek in order - the schedulers pic'n'mixed episodes at random, so they might well have run a season two episode in the first few months for all I know).

PS: The Amrican accents in Tomb? It is very bizarre hearing them, particularly as the guy who plays Callum has gone on to be probably the best Sherlock Holmes of all time (albeit only on radio).

I just watched this one myself, and I gotta say I actually found those Cyberman to be a lot creepier than the revamped ones in the 80s (that everyone seems to love and I just find goofy looking).

Of course the creepy music and atmosphere in Tomb might have helped too...


(And what was up with those ridiculous Cyber-mice things with the big eyes? Were those supposed to be scary? I can't imagine myself being frightened of those even as a kid in the 60s! lol)
