CBS's John Van Citters interviewed about The Guidelines

After listening to the podcast, I get the impression is the "no Star Trek actors" means they don't want anybody playing the same character, as that might be mistaken as some manner of legitimacy, I don't think Vic's voice work crosses that line.
I hope you're right.

I've seen that happen so much in the years I've been on twitter that I finally just had to start ignoring it. I join in with others celebrating or discussing the things I enjoy in a constructive manner. If all they do is hate and crap on things, it only feeds their ego by trying to engage them. I like what I like, and I don't tear down people that don't - which is something I wish more people ascribed to.
I wouldn't mind that last part, either, except that they'll jut right in there in a thread where people are amicably discussing something, and then it becomes all about that person's attitude.

That's true. I just point it out because I see it every day, and I can't just like a movie or like music, I have to justify it to people who scream louder and louder the more I try to explain why I do.

I'm just bothered because Star Trek is my fandom. It is the only one that I take an active part in and we're suppose to be better because of "Gene's Vision".

As @Firebird says, and I know we agree, it's in every fandom. Hell, I'm a Brony, and you should see some of the hateful comments that come from certain groups of people in that fandom. I mean, this is a fandom based on the elements of harmony, a show about friendship, one that embraces kindness, generosity, laughter, loyalty, and honesty. I have seen "fans" scream at each other and shout each other down, denigrate one another, and just be truly awful people.

Meanwhile, Axanar fans be like

Yes. How can I get my fanfilm out if there's a fan production out there pumping out a dozen episodes and flooding the fan film community? Series quickly become revenue chains, which is something CBS/P is out to prevent.

We've produced quite a few fan productions. There's no "revenue chain" here.

Yet, there is nothing to prevent a fan production from making a few "one-offs" that use the same characters. They just need to package them carefully, and avoid any labeling or titles that indicate that the one-offs are a series.

We have retitled all our new productions. No more series name. No more copyright notices.

Then simply limit the number of episodes per year. I'd like to see a rule like this (won't hold my breath, mind you):
a) Each episode must be a self-contained story.
b) No episode can be longer than 45 minutes.
c) No more than two episodes can be released per calendar year.
Then productions can do longer-form stories, but can't do movies, and can't "flood the fan film community" (whatever that means).

Naw. It's unfair to folks who havent the budget to do a 45 minute production. It also limits our story telling by prohibiting our 10 min vignettes. All the rules that everyone makes will be unfair to someone. Why not see if these guidelines are actually something do-able before we just throw it all out and start all over?

Welcome to film production in general. For a feature film they often build sets to use ONCE. These aren't 'fan series' guidelines; they're 'fan film' guidelines. Do your story - move on. And if you do decide to do different stories with different ships/characters, you can probably redress or reuse a previous set.

I agree that CBS/P doesn't want fan series, but I don't think they're saying you cant have recurring characters. Mr V seemed more interested in shutting down a lengthy series to tell one story than anything else.

Its clear CBS and Paramount do not want fans doing their own series any longer. As was said in the Podcast "That's what we (meaning CBS/Paramount) do..." (referring to series and full length feature films.) That will upset a number of fans - for sure, but they are not being ambiguous here.

I do not agree with your interpretation. I truly think the intent is to prohibit lengthier stories. If Im wrong, they know where to find me. ;)

A fan film is not a 6 figure production, It is a group of like minded fans pooling their resources together to create a film. If that requires $99,999 - $1,300,000 dollars you are creating something other than a fan film.

Quite. With our current studio, it's cast members from various productions coming together and building the platforms the sets are seated upon, rearranging/redistributing/repairing wardrobe for cast members, and even laying a hundred dollars of low-grade carpet remnants on the sets with some cheap caulk someone gave us. We rarely have asked for donations, and when we do, it's for specific things like lumber, paint, or digital picture frames which we use for monitors. It's eating hot dogs and chips while we run our lines. It's everyone doing everything to make the shot, only to hear me say, "Perfect! Do it again!" And we all laugh and do it again. And that's just a part of what it is to create a fan film.

They do not seem to be saying that if you don't adhere to these guidelines they'll go after you.

They're saying instead that if you adhere to these guidelines you're safe.

That's a little different.

I caught that too and when the issue of guidelines first came up, I asked who or how would they enforce them. I am sure many of the "Fan Films" will strive to honor the spirit of the guidelines. I'm just concerned when the next profiteer rolls in, the guidelines will change to a single rule, DON'T.

I'm hoping that A) no one is that stupid to poke the guideline bear again, and B) if it does happen, CBS/Paramount will honor the case-by-case basis, and only go after that production.

Oh, they are really fun to listen to, and even more fun to create. I've been in a few episodes of Starship Excelsior. They were small parts, either as the heavy, or as a security officer, but they were so much fun, especially the parts where I got to be the bad guy.

It just felt so good to be a part of something bigger, and to be a part of something where I can express how much I appreciate Star Trek. You want a labor of love? Those guys are in it for the sheer joy of it, not for money, and it shows. ♥

(1) Thank you! As I tell everyone who volunteers, accepted or not, we couldn't exist if there weren't so many people out there who are willing to help out for sheer love of Trek. May the Great Bird of the galaxy bless your planet, Coloratura. I'm so glad you've enjoyed your time on the show, and look forward to having you back again. And your kind words about the show itself just warm the cockles of my cold, dead, captain-murdering heart.

(2) Audio drama is fantastic. It's so hard to get into because we live in such a visual age. You have to consciously tune out everything else, consciously stop yourself from trying to multitask, consciously surrender your attention -- all of which happens automatically when you start watching a video. But, once you have the knack for it, it can take you to places unimaginable on video... and it can do that for a budget of $0 and 0 cents, which is important, because that happens to be our budget on a typical episode. Better, once you've got the audio drama "key," you unlock not just one show, but an entire medium, full of classics. (The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, for example, is most famous as a series of books... but the books lost a lot in translation from the original audio drama, and are really pretty inferior to it. You should seek out the audio drama, if you can.) Sorry, this is a little off-topic and becoming a bit of a rant, but, as an audio producer, I'm obviously pretty passionate about it. (Years ago, I wrote a short article about How To Listen to Audio Drama here.)

(3) Wait, what? Don't take this the wrong way, Coloratura, but who actually are you? :D The whole username thing really throws me off. (For instance, I finally realized this week that danlav is a person I am friends with on Facebook. I just never made the connection between his real name and his TrekBBS username.)

As an avid fan, I did not know HHG started out as an audio drama. I have all of the books, but I never knew of the audio version! I will check that out. :D

I'm John Allen. I was J. Allen at one time, but then I changed to my more musical moniker about 6 months ago.
Let's see, I played a park officer in episode #4A, "A Day At the Park,". I was an Anbar crew member, and a Blue Gill in episode #309, "The Graceful End." I also played Blue Gill #1 (Shaz) in episode #308, "What Happened On Gevinon Prime."

I'm the one that got to growl a lot. :D

Oh, I'd never forget Shaz! We use that scene as our test scene for new engineers now. It's perfect because it's technically simple, but all the characters in it are extremely vivid. Easy to make it sound good. That's thanks to you! (and Clay's "Visser")

You'll be back. :)

Oh, you say that to all the guys. :adore:

I mean, yes, I do. But it's all still true!
